Exactly one hundred years ago, one of the most amazing war stories happened in the trenches of France.

Christmas Eve, 1914, war ravaged Europe in what was called The Great War, and we now call "World War I". British, French and Germans fought against each other for no reason greater than "glory" and conquest. Humans slaughtered each other in the deadliest war the world had ever seen. But on that Eve, there was movement and sounds coming from the German trenches; they were decorating for Christmas, and singing Christmas songs. Yet the Allies did not attack or fire. The artillery grew silent and all that was heard was the responding carols of the British soldiers. After a little while, some soldiers of both sides ventured out onto no man's land and met with each other. Soon they were joined by the rest of their comrades. They talked, and laughed and traded presents like cigarettes and tobacco. Together they sung carols and played football (the REAL kind, known to Americans as "Soccer"). The battlefields became quiet, and the generals were startled to see their soldiers had declared their own truce for that night and Christmas Day.

The stood together, playing football, talking and laughing, not caring that they could not understand each other. Not caring about the guns that lay discarded in the trenches behind them, Not caring that their generals ordered them to fight, not caring for the useless uniforms they wore.
That night they were not German, British, French or anything. They were human, and it was Christmas and that was all that truly mattered.

If there is are greater story of kindness, loyalty, honestly, laughter, generosity, friendship and harmony; I have not heard of it.

Unfortunately, fighting resumed entirely by January, and there were no more truces the next years due to orders from their commanders, as well as the bitterness created by mounting causalities. But it is still a heart warming tale, showing that somewhere deep inside human hearts, we desire to be good. Someday, love and harmony may reign on Earth as it does in Equestria.

Love & Tolerance everpony. Happy Christmas, and Hearth's Warming!

Thanks,
I figured somepony should mention that story today, no one I follow did on here or dA. It's a truly amazing story... people nowadays forget the past so often. It's truly sad.
That story is something we should remember more than any battle, in my opinion anyway.
May this Christmas see peace in Ukraine and the Middle East. :fluttershysad:

It sounds like your college professor was very wise.

Happy Hearth's Warming.
