My One Year Ponyversary · 11:57pm Jun 25th, 2012
Just thought I'd commemorate this special occasion with a blog post. One year ago today, I decided to give this My Little Pony show a chance. Here's what I wrote on the forum I posted in when I was first introduced to ponies:
I haven't seen any of this, but I have decided to give it a shot! I *heart* cartoons, and it sounds like this cartoon has a pretty massive adult following - probably worth looking into!
I'll report back once I've seen some of this with my opinion. Not going to lie, I'm kind of excited.
An hour and a half later...
Three episodes in, and I can definitely see the appeal. It's just so...pleasant! I think that's the best word to describe it. I am thoroughly entertained by the pleasantness of this show.
I will definitely be watching the entire season of episodes, and probably will have them finished in a few days. As a matter of principle, I hate all things pink, but I think I may need to make an exception with Pinkie Pie. Her musical numbers are frickin' amazing. Loooool.
I ended up watching through episode five the first night. After commenting on my forum about my amusement of reading YouTube comments about wanting to punch out Gilda (comments I completely understood the emotion behind), I had this to say:
Also...and I never thought I'd say this before having watched the show...the all-pink pony is my favorite. Pinkie Pie, I love you. Please be my friend, my life would be complete.
One day later, I was nine episodes in and already downloading pony music:
Just finished episode 9. These are addictive.
And holy cow, found techno music inspired from the show by "Eurobeat Brony". Best fandom ever? *proceeds to download*
Best fandom ever, indeed.
It's been an amazing year. Thanks to all my readers for your wonderful comments and encouragement! You're a big part of why this year has been so wonderful, despite so many really terrible things happening in my personal life. Ponies and the Brony community have gotten me through so much these past 12 months. I'm eternally grateful that my boredom one year ago drove me to try this show out. I honestly don't know how I would've mentally gotten through this past year without it.
I'll end this post with a quote (and the gif I posted with it) from two days after I started to watch MLP:
Pinkie Pie, you are amazing. How did I ever live without you?
363 days later, and I still don't have an answer to that. I'm just glad that I'll never again need to experience life without the joy of ponies.
Happy anniversary!

Pinkie Pie is the best! It took me until season 2 to realize the genius that is the Pie, but yeah

Congratulations!
I bet if you didn't have ponies you'd be like this:

Happy Ponyversary.
When or how did you become a huge Sparity fan after falling in love with the show?
Well, if your favorite is Pinkie, how come you haven't done ant Pinkie-centric fics?
And happy Pony-Versary. You might be the longest veteran of MLP that I have actually talked to.
196407 Some of the finest ponies out there, indeed.
196425 Hold on, let me get Rainbow Dash ...I can't jump too high on my own...
196474 Pinkie love!
196552 Yeah, pretty much...
196737 I'd been a big Spike fan since the first few episodes. Rarity took longer to grow on me (Suited for Success drastically changed my opinion of her). However, it wasn't until Secret of my Excess that I started shipping them. Well, to be more precise, it wasn't until after seeing that episode, then going back through and watching the entirety of Season 1 over again and being totally shocked at all the hints they dropped that Rarity cared for Spike pretty specifically (she's the first and often only pony to greet him, she's the pony who's concerned about finding him in Over a Barrel even more than Twilight almost, she seeks out his company more than any other pony does, etc) that I realized this show had been gradually building this ship up. Now, whether they built it up as a romance or as a one-sided romance/good friendship thing, was open to interpretation. But it was clear that the show truly had been crafting this relationship for quite some time. More than just the "shippy vibes" of Secret of my Excess, it was my astonishment at how well the show had handled this "silly crush" and evolved it over the episodes that got me into the idea of Sparity.
196860 I haven't done any Pinkie fics for multiple reasons. First, I'm intimidated by her. She's my favorite, and I worry about messing her up and not portraying her correctly. Second, Spike and Rarity's relationship fascinates me. It's an unfinished story with so much potential. I've yet to become fascinated enough by any untold Pinkie Pie story to sit down and write one. She's wonderful the way she is and I don't feel a huge desire to add to her story or drag her through any drama. Third, Pinkie Pie isn't great as the lead. I personally love her having as much screentime as possible, but it's difficult to write a good "Pinkie as the main character" story. She's too random. What she IS great at, is as a secondary supporting character. She adds amusement to any episode or fic. That's why she played a sizeable role in How to Woo Your Lady. She's excellent in support, and I wanted to include her as much as possible.
197148 "She's my favorite, and I worry about messing her up and not portraying her correctly.
I had the exact same trepidation, but you just kinda have to go out and do it. You'll see where (if) you went wrong, and then the next time you write her she'll look better. You can write as much as you want, you know. There's no official judges around here, as far as I can see. No 'one submissions limit'.
But I do agree she works well as a support, and less of a steady POV. Too jumpy
Happy Ponyversary!
