Human contact with Equestria happens as usual but... something decidedly odd happens after a time. Ancient genetics within the ponies start to become active and those who have these genes start to act just a teeny tiny bit subservient towards humans. Some, but not all ponies (depends on who has these genes) start to want to just be near or be with humans as symbiotic companions; not for sex per se but just for companionship; wanting to be petted or brushed or just to cuddle.
Some ponies with these human empathetic/servile genes can live normal lives quite happily. Some are just... more fulfilled when there are humans near, when they work or live with humans and love to be stroked, brushed and petted. There are other ponies, however, who are the 'severe' cases; the ancient genes scream at them to seek a human companion; unable to function at all without a man or woman at their side. Those are the ones who'll stick with you for life if you let them into your hearts...
Many of these ponies, thankfully, find "the right human." Some do not. Some spend their entire lives searching, seeking, for someone not of Equestria out of a need they just can't identify. A suppressant can be issued but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't... A kind of schism develops; those ponies who view humans as "merely another race" see the ponies with the "companion genes" as plain odd, resulting in rather nasty slurs being tossed about. "Human Pet. Fancier. Lapony. Ape/Monkey Lover" and so on...
Interesting... Could be a good scenario for a story, or at least a oneshot.
Seems a bit disturbing, but to each their own I guess.
