That Moment When You Have an Idea but Know You Can't Do It · 3:05am Sep 12th, 2014
Good evenin to ye, me pirate crew!
So, part of my university's traditional festivities for homecoming includes each fraternity presenting a dance. Well, listening to a new (relatively) song off a recommendation, I just had a great idea for one. What song, you might ask?
That song. The idea I had is actually a narrative dance sort of like a music video where the song's tempo and rhythm coincide with the story. The basic story would be the classic film The Karate Kid using body language as opposed to dialogue. For those who haven't seen this eighties classic, it's about a young man named Daniel who is bullied mercilessly to the point of great physical injury by some asshole karate students from his town. Out of both respect and empathy, an old Japanese man named Mr. Miyagi trains Daniel to become a better fighter, and over the course of the movie, Daniel learns not just how to fight, but also how to be confident in himself and stand up against them, ultimately defeating the asshole kids in a competition.
Anyways, all that is to say that the dance itself would actually incorporate martial arts moves into it, as three of our members including myself have a background in it, with the slower paced parts of the song being Daniel training and meditating and the faster post-bass drop parts being the actual fights themselves. In my head, it looks fucking great.
However, we could never pull it off for several reasons. Firstly, I'm not even in the dance this year. Then there's also the fact that my fraternity brother, an actual dance major, is the sole authority on it this year. Also, while I'm decent enough at dancing, I'm not good enough by far to direct and choreograph the whole thing. Lastly, on top of the risks in having untrained folks doing martial arts moves, especially scripted ones to a rhythm, can easily get out of synch, or worse yet, injure people and we don't have the time to properly practice with them to a safe degree.
Oh well. Maybe next year.
A terrible feeling.

Right! It's a shame, cause I know the frats and sarats would eat it the fuck up, but there's just no way.

Yeah. If I bring it up and we get the jump on it, we might could do it.
Come 'ere to Denmark Cap'n, me and me jolly buddies be more than willin to help he outta this 'ere predicament.

Sure, I'll oblige! But given the naval tech at The Pirate King's disposal, the voyage would take about three months.

And the Danes don't exactly have a good history with any ships getting close to our borders.
*cough* Lord Nelson *cough*

Ye underestimate me power as a pirate, lad.
