What people like to read: Now and Then · 1:35am Jun 9th, 2012
It has come to my attention that over the year of being a member here, and reading the fanfictions as they come and go, I have noticed that there is no real category everyone likes. I do not fully understand it, but as I try to compare it, I can only relate it's ways to the ways of Communism. Why I relate this to Communism is that everybody on FimFiction wants to make it BIG, like TOP 5 BIG, but can't. They stay the same, because writers who don't make it the first time must wait a while before there chance is shown again, maybe it won't for some. I have only come remotely close to getting anywhere near the Top 5 in one fic, but I have gotten onto some of the TOP READ before the BIG UPDATE a few months back. Like when starts were taken away to likes and dislikes, etc.
I can also see that this is turning into the big Celebrity Hassle as I call it, when famous writers or actor's opinions are so much more important than everyone else's even if they have the same thought of said famous person. Does that make any sense? It shouldn't. I am not putting down on anyone, but for instance, Buttersc0tch Sundae has put up a lot on the site over a long period of time, and I don't think anything of that, she is an extremely talented clopfic writer and shipping writer, but every time, or most of the time she posts, she instantly gets to the TOP 5. I am just using her as an example, so I don't mean harm to anyone.
Next, people get into the TOP 5 sometimes for mindless nonsense of a fic. Not saying any names, because it has been happening for a while, but what happened to fan fiction? Some stories are getting so far away from ponies, but still meet the appropriate acquirement to be on the site, that it doesn't make any sense. Want I would like to see are very long, or very short fanfics, that have a really nice plot, a good story background, and leaves the reader with an after shock after reading it.
I don't want to see fanfiction melt away to mindless nonsense, but at least stay withing the boundaries of ponies. I love Human Pony fics, dark, comedy, slice of life, all that stuff, but it seems that we are slipping away from that and moving towards something much worse, and I just want to avoid it.
You provide a valid point here, 1) SO I take it you don't like trollfics then?
2) I still don't see how this relates to communism
3) Err, well I got nothing
4) The reason popular author's opinions are more valued than the opinion of the little guy is just that, the author is popular, more people read their stories, this in turn probably means more people read their blogs and PM them and such. This in turn means that more people are likely to share their views with the author which will in turn probably result in people valuing the Author's opinion more.
5) In response to the whole TOP 5 shebang it's probably because of reason 4, they're popular authors. More reads generally equals more tracks and likes. If it fills the requirements for featuring as a result of all the reads, it's more likely to get featured and read even more, this in turn causes a cycle.
163831 Very well put, when I related it to Communism, I meant it's social status, where you are born rich, you die rich, you are born poor, you die poor. I just wish that people would take the time to stop looking at the big writers, and browse the stories for smaller time writers, they would be amazed at what they find, some small time writers have better stories that big ones do!
163854 1) LOL in communism there is no rich, true Communism results in an egalitarian society for all except the ruling party. But yeah, I know what you mean, the big authors are good but yeah, I've found quite a few really good stories on this site that have little to no views, it's a shame really.
