Shadowmane PX-41

Just your average british lad. I write things for a living. It’s the strangest living you’ll ever find, second only to my inability to take myself off of the grid.

Shadow's Game Related Review #2: Kirby Triple Deluxe · 8:20pm Jun 14th, 2014

Boy it's been a while since I reviewed a game on Fimfiction. Sorry if I've been that late, I was raging at the countless number of times I died in the True Arena. You know what to expect now.

Kirby Triple Deluxe is one of the more recent games on the 3DS, and quite frankly, blew me away once I got into playing it.

The plotline revolves around Kirby, duh, only this time his rival, King Dedede has been captured by an unknown sorceror named Taranza. Utilizing all of his powers, Kirby must ascend the Dreamstalk to save King Dedede from Taranza's wicked desires.

The levels are not only very inventive with the jumping into the background and back idea, but they're also very fun and memorable most of the time, I say most of the time because of that one part in Royal Road where the pushers kept screwing me over, and over, and over. The levels are also complimented with the style of music they used, most of it is a breath of fresh air in the Kirby musical dictionary, and they did bring some great songs back from the other games. The one thing I was surprised at, was the music for the very first level. An opening part of the first level sounds roughly similar to Pinkie's Singing Telegram, and that was amazing to have blast in my ears for the very first level.

If we're gonna talk about the Kirby powers, we might as well start with his new ones. Oh yeah, Kirby gets 4 NEW Copy Abilities in this game.

Beetle: This gives Kirby a beetlehorn hat, this hat enables him to swing it in very flexible and quick ways, enabling you to maul the hell out of enemies. It also replaces Kirby's puff jump with some flapping wings sprouting out of the sides of the hat, which is quite nice, seeing as you don't have to keep mashing the A button to fly

Bell: Gives Kirby a bell hat and two bells for him to utilize as weapons. First off, his most basic attack which I call the Ding-Dong Earrape, enables Kirby to continuously pound the shite out of enemies with him smashing the bells right on their faces. These also make a ding shockwave which hit enemies around it as well. He does have some other attacks, but naming them all would be a chore.

Archer: This one, in my opinion, is the coolest looking new Copy Ability for Kirby to get. It gives him a Robin Hood hat (Complete with the feather in it) and a sweet looking bow and arrow. Fire the arrows willy nilly like Legolas, or charge an arrow up for blistering results on the field of combat.

Circus: Gives Kirby a Big Top hat and enables him to pull off all kinds of Circus-y crap, such as: Juggling Batons, Jumping The Ring Of Fire, Making Balloon Art, Somersaulting And Backsaulting, and many others. Everything besides the very basic Tightrope crap.

While these four new abilities sound pretty cool, I mostly found myself comfortable with the Archer and Beetle abilities in the end. I don't really know, maybe it's because they're overpowered once used right? Those are the ones I leaned towards the most in the end, although they bring back a lot of the more memorable abilities from the other games if you don't like the new abilities that are presented here.

The worlds are my next part here. First off, take a good long look at the world names:

Fine Fields
Lollipop Lane
Old Odyssey
Wild World
Endless Explosions
Royal Road

Notice anything about the names? I'll tell you.

Fine Fields: F
Lollipop Lane: L
Old Odyssey: O
Wild World: W
Endless Explosions: E
Royal Road: R

F-L-O-W-E-R. This is a massive Spoiler for the final boss, like C-R-O-W-N-E-D for Magolor. As the stand for feature tells us, the final boss is supposedly a freaking flower! And at this point, I know what you're thinking: "What the f**k were they thinking?! Kirby can easily kill a flower! This final boss is gonna suck!!!"

You then see the enormous flower with otherworldly powers, 4 massive ass wings and a freaking face bloom and you're like: "Holy Motherf**king S**T!!!!!"

The worlds are very vibrant in Triple Deluxe and sometimes veer off their description in a way that I actually improve for once. Old Odyssey goes from sunset-style to Ice world in a few levels, Lollipop Lane has a haunted carnival and factory area, and Wild World suddenly turns into a living tomb of the dead, with snake statues breathing fire at you. These also have you pumped for the boss of each world, which has their own unique fighting style.

Fine Fields BOSS: Flowery Woods: While it does look similar to Whispy Woods from most of the Kirby games, Flowery Woods fights in a completely different way than Whispy does. It's able to detatch its' roots from the ground and leap into the air and background, giving it a sense of mobility. Also it can fire razor sharp flowers and deadly cotton balls, as well as overgrow its' roots straight out of your ground and pierce you with them.

Lollipop Lane BOSS: Paintra: Paintra also resembles another Kirby boss, namely Drawcia from Canvas Curse. Resemblance aside, she fights a lot differently than you'd expect her to fight, being able to conjure weapons and clone herself just by painting, shoot painballs and cover your screen with paint. You'll be seeing a lot of colours when you fight Paintra, whether you're stoned or not.

Old Odyssey BOSS: Kracko: What is it about Kracko that hasn't been said already? Besides being a living cloud with an eye, there's nothing more about Kracko that I have to say about him. Besides the fact that he starts dropping a lot of crap as he prepares his stage sweeping attack which is unavoidable.

Wild World BOSS: Coily Rattler: This is one of those bosses that I utterly despised. Coily Rattler is a living snake statue which is hungry for Kirby. It will fire balls of flame and hit you with its' various body parts as it moves around the field like a snake. Also, it hides its' weak point, the head, behind a load of body parts that will hit you if you touch them, leaving little to no window of attack most of the time. It was also the first boss to kill me in this game.

Endless Explosions BOSS: Pyribbit: This boss was frustrating as Coily Rattler, but easy to understand once you spend enough time with it. Pyribbit is basically a really fat frog which lives in and can breathe fire. Pyribbit's attacks are very hectic and will quickly strip you of your Copy Ability should you fall prey to them. And when he gets to his halfway-dead point on the health bar, he gets even more insane, creating an active volcano in the distant background which he can use to his advantage.

Royal Road BOSS: MASKED DEDEDE!!!: Oh yeah, no-one saw this one coming. This fan favourite boss from Kirby Super Star Ultra has finally decided to seek vengeance on Kirby. Controlled by Taranza's strings, Masked Dedede is intent on killing you completely, complete with the theme song from Super Star Ultra and the signature Steel Hammer. After he takes a beatdown, he trades out his hammer for an even more deadlier Battleaxe, enabling wider, more powerful attacks and an entirely new perspective on this boss fight.

FINAL BOSS: QUEEN SECTONIA (Vespiquen): After Dedede takes his beatdown, Taranza is kicked aside to reveal the game's true antagonist, Queen Sectonia. A massive bee-humanoid with two scepters used for combat. These scepters also turn into swords, should Sectonia need to get close to Kirby. While the theme is very tense sounding, Queen Sectonia was quite easy once you get down to it. Sure, she had some dick moves here and there, but once you spent some time with her, she became very predictable and very easy to beat. And unlike most other Kirby villains, Queen Sectonia lets out an otherworldly scream when she's struck down. We haven't had a death scream in this series since Marx Soul.

But just when you think it's all over.....

World 7: Eternal Dreamland: ULTIMATELY FINAL BOSS: Queen Sectonia, MASSIVE ASS FLOWER THAT THREATENS TO ASSIMILATE ALL OF PLANET POPSTAR!!!: This fight blew the roof off of me when I got to it. First off, you have to use the 3DS's Gyroscopic Motion Control feature to fire Kirby at the mini flowers protecting the queen before shooting Kirby to the arena itself. After choosing your final Copy Ability and collecting your food from Bandana Waddle Dee, you face off against the flower herself. When you fight her, you hear one of the greatest tracks to ever come out of this game, F-L-O-W-E-R. The song is both majestic and threatening at the same time, and it greatly sets the stage for your final battle with the flower. Throughout the fight, you're trying to hit Sectonia's mini flowers which are connected to her main body, dealing her damage with every hit, just be advised that these flowers will attack back with a wide variety of attacks. Namely, lasers, lightning traps, sword tips, spiky bodies, Megalasers when Sectonia decides to come out of the background and laser blast the arena, the list goes on and on and on.

After you finally kill the flower, you think it's all over...

WRONG AGAIN BITCH!!! Sectonia is still alive and starts choking the air out of Kirby, letting out a scream for help. Dedede and the reformed Taranza bring Kirby a miracle seed, enabling him to become Rainbow Power Kirby. He then utilizes his new power to finally end the queen's life once and for all. How you ask? Simple:

Step 1: Eat 15 bomb seeds to make a rocket.

Step 2: Shoot that rocket at a giant bomb seed.

Step 3: Eat one of Sectonia's mini flowers and shoot it right back at her.

Rinse and repeat until she loses all her flowers.

Finally, after swallowing Sectonia's megalaser, Kirby spits it out right back in her face, finishing her off with a mixture of Taste The Rainbow Mutha Fucka and IMMA FIRIN MAH LAZOR.

And then the game is well and truly over forever, Floralia and the Dreamstalk are saved, and Sectonia's grave is a beautiful flower sprouting at the pinnacle of the Dreamstalk. Kirby and Dedede return home and Taranza decides to make up for his wrongdoings. Roll credits!

One Credits scene later:

You unlock Dededetour and The Arena for even more Kirby fun on the bun.

Besides the story, there are other modes in Triple Deluxe for you to try out:

Kirby Fighters: 1-4 player combat, Kirby Style! See which Copy Ability is the best in this grueling arena mode.

Dedede's Drum Dash: A very rhythmical game which sees you hitting the A button in time to three songs: Green Greens, Gourmet Go Go, and Dedede's Theme Song.

Dededetour: Play a time attack version of Triple Deluxe, but replace Kirby with King Dedede. As King Dedede, you are restricted to using a hammer for combat, so I hope you know how to use it well. Also, this is where you meet the DX bosses. DX bosses are like regular bosses, only they have some new moves which are harder to avoid and hurt you even more. They also have new skin colours when you fight their DX forms. At the end of it all, you're introduced to two secret bosses.

Shadow Dedede: It's basically Masked Dedede/Revenge but without the mask and painted black.

Dark Meta Knight's Revenge: While it is a shame that it isn't Galacta Knight, this boss does put up just as much of a fight. Being able to guard when not attacking, striking fast and often, and being able to clone himself during the halfway point, makes Dark Meta Knight's Revenge one tough boss to face.

The Arena/The True Arena: This is the pinnacle of your experience as a Kirby gamer. Fight EVERY boss with limited health recovery foods and win for a swanky trophy. This will also include Mini Bosses, DX bosses (True Arena), and the impossible to kill secret boss, Sectonia Soul (True Arena)

By the way, if you are lucky enough to face Sectonia Soul, you fight a re-paint of her colossal flower form, and her winged head soul form. And the head is harder than the flower, and the flower is very damn tough. you WILL lose your Copy Ability if your dodging is not accurate.

Overall, I liked this game. It was very well executed in all phases of the 3DS's standards, and while it was kind of a cop-out that Sectonia wasn't introduced until the end, that didn't make me hate her that much more. Instead, not only was it a surprise, but I had a lot of fun kicking the crap out of her. The new abilities are really a mixed bag depending on your style of gameplay, and personally, everyone likes to be cheap and use the Beetle ability in the True Arena for some reason. The music and worlds go hand in hand and are one of the key elements in a Kirby game, they're colourful, amazing in 3D, and the music is great.

Also, if you like eating trains, missiles, trees, and Tom The Rock, Rainbow Power Kirby (Hypernova Kirby) is the way to go.

8.5/10

By the way, here's F-L-O-W-E-R, in case you want to hear this godlike boss music:
