A silly thought on pony dating traditions · 3:02am Jun 3rd, 2014
Seeing as Equestrian culture is based in many ways on human, and in particular American, culture, even to the point of absurdity at times, it stands to reason that stallions traditionally give gifts of chocolate and flowers to mares in whom they are romantically interested. And of course, the normal human response is to eat the chocolate and display the flowers as a decoration (until they die). But horses eat flowers, and we've seen pastel ponies do the same. And chocolate is poisonous to horses, and I feel adequately justified in ignoring the occasional chocolate in the show in the service of absurdity. Therefore, a mare who receives the traditional courtship gifts will eat the flowers and display the (probably ornate) chocolates as a decoration (until they melt).
One has to wonder, though, where the tradition of giving decorative poison originated.
Huh. Well that's an interesting reversal.
I wonder if that might possibly be a reason to sacrifice your candy to Nightmaremoon on Nightmare night. Because half of it is chocolate and thus poisonous anyway.
2170066 Ooh, yes, I hadn't considered that. And if I look at that in light of my current headcanon that Nightmare Night was created to trivialize and thus defang the Cult of Nightmare Moon . . . why not further disrespect the Dark Mare by giving her poisoned tribute?
