My thoughts on the season finale · 6:52am May 11th, 2014
Well, everyone is doing this review thing on youtube or here, so I thought why not try too. I know my English is borderline criminal ,but so far you always put up with it.
Important things first: Both songs were awesome. So far the entire show has only one song I couldn't hear a thousand times. That would be "Hearts strong as Horses". I don't know, I just can't stand it like the others for some reason. But the title of the best song of the show still goes to "This Day Aria". I freaking love it, even have it on CD for my car. (Second place goes to "Bats!", just because of Tim Burton reference.)
So let's start where the episodes did: With Twilight complaining about her duties as a princess. The whole fandom complained since season start that she wasn't acknowledged as much as she should. I mean, she wasn't even important enough to get a cap. Finally she recognized that herself. But that does mean that the authors did it on purpose that she wasn't acknowledged prior to this episode. Jerks!
Entrance Tirek. I was ecstatic when he showed up. And so far I head every right to be. He was after Discord the best villain so far. Smart and strong. And if we count Discord as the prankster he is instead of a villain, Tirek is the best villain. The way he introduced himself to his first victim was cool, but there starts the bad things about him. He spoke in rhymes like that only one time. After that he was a bit of old fashioned, but thats it.
Also I thought there was a bit of a mistakes about his magic sucking ability. After he sucked a pony dry, their cutie mark disappeared. How does dyed fur suddenly disappear? Did he have a razor with him? Because that means cutie marks are really only projected onto the fur thanks to magic. It fits if you think about how the suddenly appear, but I thought at least it was magical dyed fur. And while we are talking about the disappearing cutie marks. Did you notice how only Lunas moons vanished and not the black spot? Maybe she should shower sometimes...
I have nothing much about to say about Celestia sending Discord instead of Twilight. I would have done the same. Even called it ahead in Skype, were I was talking with my friends while watching the livestream. I mean, that was the whole purpose Celestia got through the trouble reforming the god of chaos, wasn't it? Sadly, he falls for Tirek words. To the last minute I really hoped he did a double game. I mean, he seemed to know Tirek and that you couldn't trust him. (But there is also a mistake. Tireks first attack must have happened after Discord was imprisoned in stone, because Tirek said he was a legend and was surprised that he got free. But how did Discord know him than like an old buddy? Get your history straight authors!)
Then our mysterious chest. We all knew the presents they got would somehow be the keys. It was freaking obvious. And I remember how I said: "I want to see how Pinkie just enters her rubber duck into the keyhole." Ten seconds later... You get the idea. Thats all fine and dandy. But Twilights key... Yeah, come on! It should have been the diary. It was far more fitting than the stupid necklace. Also Discord, you don't give away presents as another present. Thats jerk level over 9000. But it was nice how he knew the entire time how to resolve the puzzle around the chest.
Talking about over 9000. Tirek vs. Twilight Sparkle. EPIC - End of story. DBZ sucks dick compared to that. (R.I.P. Golden Oaks. Yeah, thats the name of the library. Not Books and Branches, what some people think.)
And finally, the end. Cliche was the first thing that entered my mind. The second was: "Rangers, its morphing time!" But now we know that friendship isn't magic. It's a different kind of magic. So not magic magic. Does that makes sense? Tirek is a magic sucking centaur, but he couldn't suck the magic of friendship, so it must be something different, correct? I really want to write a villain now that uses that power too. Who says that "evil doers" can't have friends. (Evil depending on perspective after all. Except if you do evil by choice, because thats true evil.)
But overall, it was the freaking best episode of the show this far. Second would be the Canterlot Wedding. The Mane6 really kicked changeling ass there. Only way to improve this episode would have been to let the other elements fight next to Twilight. Give them the rainbow power a bit earlier. I really wanted that they beat a villain by fucking beating him into a pulp.
So, whats your impression guys? I really would like to know.
Agreed. This episode was absolutely amazing and I loved, loved, loved it! In my opinion the best episode of the entire series, would watch again any day. From the story, to the songs to the characters and the villain, who was surprisingly good even though his intentions were just world domination, everything was playing together wonderfully.
With a storyline so tight a few things will get clamped, I understand, and that will of course always produce some points to argue about. I would have really loved to see this scenario being played out in the time of a full movie. But anyways, a part that I did not understand was why giving Twilight all the magic?
The argument that Tirec doesn't know that there are four princesses is correct, he surely hasn't got the news recently, but seriously... Even though Twilight never got her time to shine as the other princesses it is still known as one. I mean in the throne room everyone could see the stained glass art of her. And furthermore Celestia knew that Tirec teamed up with Discord, who of course knew that Twilight was a princess.
This whole reason didn't make any sense, as it was an information that Tirec would find out within seconds.
You could argue that Celestia was seeing that in the long run it would play it as they had wanted to, but since Twilight already tied with Tirec I am sure that Celestia, who would have been able to control all this magic far better, would have burned this scourge off the planet in the blink of an eye. This was extremely risky.
We got a fight scene though that was in terms of epicness of the charts. This fight... wow, nopony wants to mess with Twilight now I believe. After the library was gone, Twilight sure was angry and damn... I don't wanna be close if she shoots her powerbeam.
I thought hits was kinda obvious from the very beginning. It is basically what fuels the Elements of Harmony which were powerful enough to stop everything.
Isn't this basically what Chrysalis does? She was able to use the power of love from another pony for her own will, I am sure that this could work with friendship just as well, therefor even if she doesn't have any friends on that level she would still be able to use the power if she was able to siphon it from somewhere.
And of course...
RIP in pieces Golden Oaks Library (2010-2014). Never forget.
Also I do wonder what they have in store for season 5. Not that I'm complaining that they are doing more, but I would have accepted this as a series finale.
I agree. I even did my own review. I do agree about the Mane6 kicking ass. I would have had them beating the magic out of him.
