Headcanon time: Naming in Equestria · 9:32am Apr 13th, 2014
Names in Equestria are extremely unusual. First, most of them do have a meaning, which obviously doesn't happens in the real world. Secondly, most ponies have a name that fits their talent in one way or another, or perhaps is linked to their apperance.
Now, as we all know, when ponies discover what their special talent, a rather criptic mark appears on their flank. This mark says what they are the best at, what they are. I think it would make sense for them to want to have a name that fits their talent. The parents of a foal will probably try to guess what his special talent may be in the future, and name him taking that into account.
Of couse, most of times the foal will have a completely different talent. Many ponies do change their name to fit whatever their talent is, and this is not unusual at all.
To avoid this change (It may be normal, but it still hurts a bit), some parents have started to use traditional griffon names. Griffons do NOT have cutie marks that show their talent, and thus see no need to have a name with any meaning. This kind of names are becoming more and more common with time. Back in the times when ponies saw griffons as enemies, it was very rare for a pony to have a name without meaning, but now that many griffons live in Equestria itself and the two nations are no longer in war, it's becoming more common. Trixie is a good example. Donuth Joe was probably named just 'Joe' by his parents, but he decided to add a first name.
Surnames as we know don't exist in Equestria. Some families of ponies are held togeter under the same name (The Apple family, the Kicker clan), but this only happens when this family has very strong bonds between all its members. There is a certain sense of pride in using a surname. 'My name is Cloud Kicker, and my family fought in the Lunar Rebellion'. And even in this kind of families, many ponies do not use the surname. For example, Applejack uses it (Her full name being Jaqueline Apple), but Big Macintosh does not.
Most pony names are composed by two words, but there are many exceptions, such as Rarity, Octavia, Rumble, or Celestia and Luna themselves.
I don't think there is any pony with a name formed by three words. It would probably sound cheesy.
Pinkamena Diane Pie
2161210 Uh...what?
Also, I was done with my point on The Appletheosis.

This was a reply to your blog.
Pinkamena Diane Pie
2161230 Oh, that. Well...
First, I said rare, not impossible.
Second, Pinkamena Diane Pie is a traditional griffon name, and hus follows the same rules as names for humans.

Pinky Pie isn't a griffon. And I misunderstood, but you don't have 'rare' anywhere in your blog. Just pointing that out.
2161572 Okay, I didn't say rare. But my other point stands. Pinkamena Diane Pie is a traditional griffon name. And it doesn't matter if she's not a griffon, as I said up there, some parents do prefer names without meaning, so their sons or daughters will not change them when they get their mark.

Is this fanon or canon? I don't recall where it is canon, but it has been a while since I watched them all. If it is canon, can you please refer me to the episode(s)?
2161939 Pure fanon. It's just my explanation of why all ponies seem to have a very appropiate name for their talent.
2161953
Oh. I feel like an idiot.
2161980 Why's that?
I think against this cause we've seen 6 ponies who names connected their talents and 3 ponies names that will connet
2373869 Let me go one by one
Every single member of the Apple family is named after an apple. Applejack is named after her family, not specifically after her talent. It was just a coincidence.
Flutter is something that pegasi can do as well as butterflies. Just look at Flitter.
Pinkie Pie is named after the bubblegun pink coat and mane. And her talent are not pies, but making everypony happy.
Rainbow Dash was named after the color of her manes...And again, dashing is something pegasi can do as well.
Rarity is a rather generic name anyways. I just means 'unique', and wouldn't her parents want her to be unique?
Twilight Sparkle was names after her mother and the color of her coat. In this case, she does have an sparkle on her mark, but again, Sparkle is probably a not-so-rare name among unicorns, who can use magic. Example: Sparkler.
I think ponies only change her names when they are completely different to their talent. And some simply don't.
I prefer this over thinking that the name automatically fixes the pony talent.
