Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: Somepony to Watch Over Me · 9:44pm Mar 9th, 2014

If I want to offer piecemeal thoughts about the episode, I can!

That was unexpectedly world-buildy. Which is one of the better kinds of world-buildy, not that there are many bad ones. Chimerae, fire swamps, Cajuns, and refrigerators (albeit one that appears to be a modified, uninsulated cabinet. It has a shelf that's the perfect height for apple storage. You can't tell me that that's not a custom job.)

It's always interesting to see an episode about the characters aging and maturing. Cartoons can easily fall into a time abyss, and with the Crusaders, it could be argued that this one already has. Still, here we see irrefutable proof of someone taking another step on life's journey. As was noted on one of the streams, "I can barely hear the audio over the sound of Applejack's biological clock."
What? What did you think I was talking about?

I liked that Applejack explicitly said she called Rarity in to watch over the other Crusaders. Would've been awfully hypocritical of her to go full helicopter mom on Apple Bloom then leave two fillies of the same age unsupervised.

Oh, and this episode also saw the return of the horribly literal idiom. There haven't been many after Season 1, with its judging a book by its cover, getting up on a soapbox, and taking a leap of faith. But no, now we have someone who's literally always looking over someone else's shoulder. Hooray. :facehoof:

Lastly, Granny Smith wasn't sure which of the two routes was worse. What did Big Mac encounter? My money's on shrieking eels. Or shrieking fangirls. Maybe shrieking fan-eels.

Good. That was enough time to finish applying the last of the foam rubber. The cards should be safe to read.

I've always been of the opinion that absorb is a kind of OP mechanic, but at the same time I kind of want them to bring it back for something.

So no card for destroying target song? Cause this gives a good excuse for one.

1913987
I considered it, but that was clearly a counterspell, and anything I could think of was a more awkward version of Annul or Nullify. I did give a nod to No-singaloo in Blown Cover, though.

1914839 Hmmm, what about a version where you gain one life for each verse counter on it? The flavor text could be something like "The song was going to be how long? Glad I stopped it when I did."

1915050
Did that already. See Luminous Resonance.

Oh, design space. You seem so wide open until I step on my own heels...

1915099 Hmmm, okay then how about one that damages the owner with the destruction? You haven't one that yet, and it would make a nice black spell, Snuff Song.
