Discussion: "Belmont" · 6:40pm May 16th, 2012
The word "Belmont" occurred to me as a word that had great potential. As it happens, it's the name of an area local to me - Belmont road, Belmont church, Belmont avenue, all that. But it seems like a very cool word to use in a story.
I can't decide what it might be, though. So I want to know what you guys think! If you came across a story that was just called "Belmont" ... what do you think it would be about? Is Belmont a villain? Is it a magical place? Is it a spell Twilight has discovered? Is it a new type of martial arts? Is it a psychological complex? Is it a type of bell (in which case we would spell it "Bellmont")?
This isn't really me cheating and fishing for ideas, I just wanted to open it up to discussion to see what you guys thought. So... who or what is "Belmont"?
Shoot. Um, Belmont can mean like, anything. I doubt I'm much help here.
Belmont: a racetrack for thoroughbred racing in Elmont on Long Island
so it's related to a racetrack...
if not that, there's Castlevania
Belmont makes me think of Pavel Bermondt, because his army attacked my country when it was just newly founded. He made a pretty big mark in our history(as an evil meanie pants). I think Belmont should be somethinhg evil because of the similarities in Belmont and Bermondt and knowing that Bermondt is evil.
I think it'd make a pretty good character name, though definitely a protagonist or a comedic villain. Not a serious villain like Discord/Chrysalis/Nightmare Moon, but a funny one like the ones Pinkie imagines in MMMystery. Given you're writing about ponies, I think the Bellmont pun could be amusing if it's for a character with bells for a cutie mark.
Simon Belmont hero of Castlevania.
Yeah, Castlevania pretty much. Especially the soundtrack "bloody tears".
Don't know about anypony else, but I think of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belmont_Stakes
Belmont sounds a bit like a place. A valley, or a mountain to be exact. It somehow sounds a LOT mountain-related. (mons, montis means mountain in Latin).
Belmont? Castlevania for sure, it would really be nice some crossover with it. I had never seen one of those though... hint?
I confess I had no idea Belmont had anything to do with Castlevania.
I like 120497's thoughts particularly - not even just the mont/mountain link, it sounds particularly grand and somehow dark and mysterious to me.
Argh! Swine university exams! If I had time on my hooves I would craft a world, I tell you. As it is I have to store all my ideas away in a notebook to be looked at after the exams.
Belmont = beautiful mount (as in mountain/peak).
