Author Recomendation: Thyrai · 12:02pm Jan 13th, 2014
Thyrai was one of the first fimfiction writers I had the privilege of reading, and was one of the very first authors I started following. After getting into the show for the first time, accepting the label of brony, I stumbled across this site. I, of course, being a lover of sadfics immediately HAD to filter all stories to show only Sad in the tags. Oh, I read some memorable stories; The Light Goes Out comes to mind. It was a powerfully written story, and reminded me of how terrible the passage of time is. To be immortal was to see the ones you care about pass away right before your eyes. Strength that could crack trees, magic that could save entire kingdoms, energy that would put even the most hyped up otakus all laid low by the inexorable grasp of time.
I stumbled, then, across The Magic Never Fades Away, with this description:
When the light dims and the flame burns out, the magic inside of us all will forever remain.
I do not like long summaries. They detract the story and excessive summarizing will lead to no emotional impact. Thyrai here manages to capture my interest with this extraordinarily short summary.
Put simply, it was the first story to ever make me cry. I'm not talking about watery eyes and sniffling, maybe a tear or three like My Little Dashie did. I'm talking full out CRYING. My mom had to ask if I was all right, and I ended up having to take a shower to wash away the frankly disgusting amounts of saltwater that was all over my face and keyboard. Thyrai had managed what not even the legendary MLD could accomplish; it moved me, something that very few things can claim to do. It sapped my will; it may have even literally made me depressed. I emphasize excessively with the characters. Fictional characters are my best friend, I'm not at all ashamed to admit. I may have been in middle school at the time, but it still beat out the "friends" that turned their backs on me in school.
Decay is another of his stories that I read months after completed TMNFA, having been emotionally exhausted and resorting to Youtube crack and the show to cheer me up again. I was now in high school, and felt like I could take the story made by the author that managed to so powerfully move me.
I was wrong. I was so terribly, terribly wrong.
I'm not going to say any more on Decay, but it's a masterfully written story. Thyrai excels at conveying emotion, and his imagery exceeds even the best authors I've read. All of his works easily get a 5/5, the first ever, and I'm proud to give Thyrai the not-even-an-honor, "First Author I Reccomend."
If you're looking for powerful stories that move your soul and leave your feelings numb from the blows it just took, Thyrai's your man. He's only written three stories, two of which I covered and the third I just read but not at all coherent to comment on at this time (It's four in the morning; I should be asleep but insomnia will do this to you). Rest assured, Thyrai is an author you are NOT going to regret reading.
~Ciao,
Poise
P.S: I stopped following Thyrai when I realized he was suspended in some sort of odd limbo, not posting any new stories yet oddly responding to comments. Maybe writer's block, maybe he doesn't even log on anymore, but he still gets my full rec.
