Chaff in My Head Cannon: Herd Mentality in Equestria

Bare with me here, this is probably going to get weird.

Ponies, and horses in general, are herd animals by nature. They follow similar dynamics to wolf packs, though it's a much more fluid arrangement. Whereas wolf packs tend to be linear, pony herds are more like tiers of dominance, with more than one pony able to be at any one tier.

    Twilight's Rivals

Had this thought going through my head and I'd like to share.

All of Twilight's rivals represent directions Twilight's life could have gone if she'd not been such a faithful student and then good friend.

Chaff in my Head Cannon: Starlight Glimmer

So, I was really enjoying the season 5 finale right up until the ending. And that ending got me thinking, and that thinking got me kind of annoyed.

How in the hay is Starlight Glimmer able to use magic that is equal to Twilight? Twilight froze an entire battle, but she couldn't overcome one unicorn? And when she and Starlight fight they both run out of juice at the same time?

Chaff in my Head Cannon: Fancy Pants

There was a lot rumbling around in my head today.

    Anyway, this will be short.

So, I was thinking about Fancy Pants a while ago and I was trying to reconcile why he was so successful, rich, and well connected yet still kept himself friendly and approachable.

I think it's his special talent.

Chaff in my Head Cannon: Equestria's Origins · 10:03pm Dec 7th, 2013

So.

I tend to be a strange sort of thinker. I love to use my imagination and daydream about any old thing that takes my fancy, but I have this nearly insatiable urge for those flights of fancy to make sense - at least within the world in which they inhabit.

Given that, here's my thoughts on how the world of FiM came into being:

It's earth.

Yeah, thought up by plenty before me, but here's where that whole "needs to make sense" bit comes into play.

Why would Celestia and Luna need to raise the sun and moon? Why would ponies need to do work to cause the changing of the seasons? Where the heck did all these magical, talking, multicolored, tiny horses come from anyway?

For the first two questions, my personal head space origin for the sun and moon being moved around by magic came about because they no longer do so on their own. The sun, by my thinking, died out some time before ponies and griffins and manitcores. The removal of the center of our solar system - or at least the removal of its current benefits, would take the seasons with it. What currently is called the sun in Equestria is not the sun we have on earth today. It is a magical creation made to save the planet and all life on it.

This, of course, begs the question of who created it, and my idea is that the planet, sensing its own demise, focused its entire life force into its own preservation. This was the birth of magic.

That magic, as would be expected of such a focused effort, was truly born. It lived and thought and worked. As the child of the earth its first acts were to do what was needed to save its parent and the sun as known to Equestria was created.

Magic didn't stop at that though and continued to... permeate the world. This caused the changes in animals that brought about talking ponies, conglomerate creatures like griffins, the growth and change of some lizards into dragons - everything was imbued with some portion of this living magic.

As things progressed, the consciousness of magic was fading. By investing so much of itself into everything it became harder and harder to remain a separate personality. Seeking to provide someone to watch over and protect the world and all the wonderful creations in it, magic created a guardian. A creature made from a bit of everything and given the power to shape the world however was needed.

Discord wasn't the dutiful son though, and magic was forced to try again.

With the last of its waking willpower, magic took the most harmonious society and combined the elements in it into two forces. A pair of sisters who could wield the power needed to keep the world at peace, and a powerful tree that bore fruit to act as a failsafe against any and all evil or corruption.

And while magic no longer has an active mind in the world, it still affects things as though through a dream.

The reason I like this concept so much is that it allows for pony history to be revealed in the show any way it likes and this idea just has to be tweaked to fit the new information.

It's also got some fun things, like magic being a living thing that those who use it are taping into and working with and the idea that Discord is sort of an older brother to Celestia and Luna.

If anybody actually reads this, let me know what you agree with, what you disagree with, and what you might change. And if you've got something that builds off of this, I'd love to see that, too.
