Some good news · 6:58pm Dec 2nd, 2013

I've been told that a person's chances of recovering from a heart attack are directly proportionate to how quickly they receive medical help. There's been a few times when my brother opened his eyes and squeezed his hand (slightly), so bodily paralysis isn't the main concern: right now, the doctors are mostly worried about brain damage. Yesterday, they said they would arrange for an MRI. The family decided to wait for the results before agreeing to a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). As much as we love him, we want what's best for him.

My mother called just now to say the doctors woke him up from sedation just long enough to ask him questions, and that he answered them by nodding his head and squeezing his hand. I knew there was hope--there always is--and even though he's got a long way to go, this is still more than I could have asked for. Thanks to everyone who offered their prayers or wished him well.

As for me, I know exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going to get back into writing. He's always been a brilliant artist and a natural-born storyteller, and it was his incredible advice and encouragement that kept me going. More often than not, it was an uphill battle for him to explain what sort of bone-headed mistakes I was making, over and over and over. I'd hate to let all his hard work go to waste.
