Story Idea 06: Headcanon Spike

This is for story ideas anyone can use and modify however they wish, just be creative and thoughtful I guess.

So this one is less of a "here's an interesting idea for a story, you should consider it" and more of a "this is what I think, build off it what you will."

A headcanon I developed fairly recently and haven't heard of any similar ones so far is about Spike's origin and nature. It is odd (to say the least) that the test for Celestia's school would be to hatch a dragon egg. Why dragons' eggs if ponies know almost nothing about them? Why do most of the students not have dragons of their own, one for each who passed? How would they even obtain that egg? Why would it require magic to hatch? To make sense of this, I came up with the idea that the egg was no egg and was instead a device that looks like one and opens only when enough magic is poured in. It would be an actual magic test that can be reset and reused to see if they have the level of potential and usage that the school requires. The 'dragon' inside would be a toy or a prop or such as a silly reward for the foals (though for this to work as proposing, not a toy to be given to each, it would stay with the device).

So how does this apply to Spike? No, I am not saying he is fake. Well, not exactly. So far, all the dragons we've seen have been far different from Spike and his magical letter system is extremely unique and strange when thought into. What I'm proposing here is that with Twilight's explosion of magic at her test, she imbued the device with her power and gave birth to Spike. Essentially, she gave life to the device and it became a true egg that hatched. That hatching and the spawn it had, however, could not be normal to the dragon rules we know. Twice he has grown, both different ways and different builds. The second time was by greed, but I believe it should be attributed to him being created from magic that made that happen and not a natural way dragons mature (especially with him reverting and the fact that teen dragons exist). We do also know there is a Come to Life spell, but it seemed of a different nature so probably not relevant here. Oh, and Celestia hiding the truth about this is a given. Of course.

Now what that means to Spike, what other abilities or limitations he has, and his future are up to what story you may create off this idea. Expand on this, modify it, whatever you want. Just let it inspire you and create something new.
