Reading FiM Fics · 12:10am Jul 2nd, 2013
If you haven't noticed, I don't read many FiM fics.
I don't watch the show, either.
I haven't seen Equestria Girls.
I haven't seen Season 3.
Now, some of you may ask (and rightly so) "How can you write fanfics about a universe you don't know anything about?"
To those people, I laugh. And I laugh again. And, this time only, you get an extra laugh, absolutely free.
Why do I not read fanfics?
Because... well, to quote Benjamin Disraeli, "When I want to read a book, I write one."
Truth be told, there are lots of good fanfics out there. But they are so covered by the horrible ones that it is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
To give an example, I looked at the featured stories some time ago.
They consisted of the following:
Call of Duty crossover with a human travelling to Equestria.
Celestia gets drunk story.
Human has a terrible life, goes to Equestria.
Okayish idea.
Some stupid Changeling thing.
FluttershyxGilda shipping.
Halo crossover with a human travelling to Equestria.
Fallout crossover with a human travelling to Equestria.
Self-Insert fic with a human travelling to Equestria and marrying Twilight Sparkle.
Self Insert Fic with a human travelling to Equestria and marrying Twilight Sparkle.
Here's a little test to see if I want to read your fic, and yeah, this is probably going to make some of you dislike this.
Does it have sex in it? I don't want to read it.
Does it have the same generic pairings? I don't want to read it.
Does it have a human traveling to Equestria? I don't want to read it.
Is it a crossover with a popular video game franchise? I don't want to read it.
Is it a sob-story about the horrible life of someone on Earth who magically gets help from Equestria? I don't want to read it.
Now, there are exceptions to SOME of those rules. But by and large, if those stories have those qualities, I don't want to read them.
I'm rather more happy to stick with my Blueblood x Octavia stuff.
You're guilty of a couple of those things in some way but I honestly wonder how you are part of the fandom without watching the show.
Honestly, how does that work? What could possibly inspire you to write fics about a universe you know and care little about?

There is SO MUCH more to Ponydom than FiM.
