It occurred to me recently that I am truly ancient in terms of the fandom. I've already passed 82+ weeks here, and I've been in the fandom long before this site even existed. I joined before season one was even finished, and I remember waiting for a good number of the episodes to air. I noticed that most people left who I've associated with in the good old days. I don't even think people can remember a time when EQD was good, or when clop was a taboo, or when people actually liked Past Sins, love and tolerance was a thing, or even when fanfiction was actually respected more than art, music or animation.
I suppose it really isn't a surprise that I've grown so distant from it all. Everything is so different, and I find myself lost, despite how shallow the fandom has become. It's so disappointing to see that nobody remembers why people liked the fandom in the first place. It wasn't about the show, the show was just a foundation. We were what made it great. Now everyone worships the show like it's the pinnacle of animation. Back then, most people had only one thing to say about it: Meh. And to me, it has only gotten worse. I think Alicorn Twilight is what officially killed it for me.
If anyone knows something to do in this fandom that's worthwhile, I'd love to know. There used to be so many livestreams, local gatherings, etc.
I suggest the thoroughly analyzing videos of people like digibrony, Paleosteno, and bronycurious. You can get great music from dBpony and assertivefluttershy. I am able to browse deviantart for hours on pony art alone. For fanfic try Vinyl and Octavia University Days if you haven't already. There's tons of stuff if you look.
Well, do you play Team Fortress 2? Because recently, Knighty and Poultron started a fimfiction server, and have been playing lots of games together. It's awesome, and it's fun, and it's cool to meet some of the people to make up, run, and contribute to the site.
1253734 Now that sounds pretty awesome! I've actually been slowly restoring my faith in the fandom over the past week. I was actually thinking about writing again too, and maybe even finish editing the stuff I already have written. But work has really been taking a lot of my time, and two of my coworkers are leaving so now I have to get more hours to make up for them... But money is money, I suppose.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up, I'll definitely join. And thanks for stopping by, it's always good to see an old friend.
1261072 Not a problem! I owe a lot to you, being the first person to really take an interest in my work on the site; and now look where I am! ryanservos.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/clinical-depression-man-drinking-alcohol.jpg
I just realized this this blog post is older than I assumed (didn't pay attention to how long ago it was uploaded), but I feel what I'm about to say is relevant anyway.
Things have certainly been up and down for the fandom lately (even more so in Season 3), but there is still a fair amount of good left in it. There are a surprising number of us that still enjoy the show for what it is not only for the quality it tried to push for, but for it's attempt at the honest morals of love and tolerance our society tends to lack more often than not.
Art is still being contributed, whether it be sketches, paintings, music, animation, or writing, and as seldom talked about as it might be, people still try to do the right thing through charity when they can.
As for the show itself, while the Alicorn Twilight thing was an obvious push for more toys by Hasbro, and the beginning of Season 4 was lackluster (sans the first two episodes and Rarity Takes Manehatten), the writing and animation began to take its climb back up for a higher quality. But, that's just my opinion on that.
All in all, the fandom may have diminished somewhat, but the fad that bloated with it once upon a time seems to have fizzled away, leaving something leaner, but still strong enough to stand on its own. There is still the original fandom in here. Perhaps not all of the same people you used to know, but perhaps just has some new blood that wish to hold the fandom up legitimately, such yourself once upon a time.
I do hope to see you more often around here, and hope things look brighter in the future.
Also, one last thing. It's completely unrelated, but I can't thank you enough for your original critique of my story. I've been steadily writing more and more chapters, and you've certainly helped me push for a higher quality standard that day.
So, Cheers dude, and I hope to come across you again.
