Gleaming Chains

Despair is the sensation of having nothing you can do.

It can be as grandiose as watching a kingdom fall. It can be as banal as an argument with a friend. It can be as fast as seeing the Elements charged against you. It can be as slow as a thousand years on the moon. Whether one despairs over a large thing or a small one, whether one feels despair for a moment or an eon, it is above all else the sensation that one has become powerless to undo a defeat.

Nightmare had felt this many times in many flavors.

Technically, seeing despair on Pride's face was a setback, for it meant that her little Twilight-of-the-Alicorns ploy had been revealed. It felt like a victory.

I've been watching the explosion of comments on Bradel's blog with increasing weariness, and have been too snowed under with work to read pony. A little byte sized bit of genuine pony fic brighten my daynight, to awaken memories of a story I'm fond of, and to remind me of why I'm here was just what the doctor ordered.

Thank you all for your support! I have an amusing anecdote to share. While working on this, I discovered an embarrassing error that slipped through editing on the last chapter of Whispering Stars. I would never have found it if I weren't searching for setting details for the start of Gleaming Chains.

In other news, Gleaming Chains is going to be from Nightmare's viewpoint, and I'm going to give up this little snippet I came up with while talking to Zocarik about the story.

Luna, who creates fate, has refused her task. Celestia, who measures fate, has abused her power. Nightmare, who cuts fate, has become deranged and indiscriminate.
