Scramblers and Shadows

Politicians prey on the vulnerable, the disadvantaged and those with an infantile sense of pride in a romanticised national identity which was fabricated by a small to mid-sized advertising agency.

    Cold Light is complete

.... and I'm two days late in announcing it, because my life is hectic and not very fimficcy nowadays.

Still, I want to make a note of this. I started Cold Light to see if I could actually write a genuine fantasy novel. Three bloody years, it took, but I did it. I finished it, and it's one of the three stories on here that I'm actually halfway proud of.

Why I'd rather write something pretentious than something good

    Okay, I'll own up. That's a deliberately confrontational clickbait-y title. I couldn't help myself.

Five ways to improve Equestria Girls: Friendship Games

Friendship Games is a middling sort of installment. Better than Equestria Girls, worse than Rainbow Rocks – but given the latter was so great, and the former so abysmal, that's no real surprise. How did it fare on its own terms? Again, middling: Better than it might've been, but still not quite as good as it could've been.

What is the value of fiction?

It's characteristic of fiction writers that we tend to be good at bullshitting. Something of a necessary skill, really. And it's characteristic of everyone that we tend to be pretty bad at judging our own importance without some self-aggrandisement.

    An important anniversary

(With any luck, this is about political as you'll ever see me get on here.)

And coming up next: Talking about the value of stories. Or another go at criticising critics. We'll see.

The pipeline and contents thereof (plus a call for prereaders) · 12:08am May 24th, 2013

I'm still around! Sort of. Things on the ponyfic front are progressing glacially right now because of that whole university work thing. (Turns out a degree takes up a significant chunk of one's time. Who'da thunk it?)

Still, I needed something to knock that alcohol-induced whinging off my front page. And now I finally have it. Y'see, I've not been totally inactive these past weeks. I have two stories that are almost ready for publication. Only beginning chapters, so far -- these are multi-parters. Still, I'm pretty excited. (This'll also be the first time I put a story out there before I've finished writing it).

One is a series of vignettes set on a single night, based around a central (rather dark) conceit. I think I've managed to come with a story for which almost every genre tag is inappropriate with this.

The other is a slice-of-life Scootafic[1] that sets out the avoid almost all of the common tropes in Scootafics in general and many aspects present in my other work up to this point. Seriously, it doesn't even have a Sad tag or anything! Just a nice meandering, linear story about Scootaloo without any silly structural pretensions or melancholic navel gazing.

Now, with all that coming along, I figure I need to ascend to the next level of fimfic authors and (try to) get a pre-reader. I also figure I'll do better to go by recommendations from my followers than ask the pre-reader group. So: Are you interested in polishing either of above? Do you know someone competent who might be? Get in contact. We'll work something out. I might even be diplomatic or summat.

[1] Because Scootaloo fills in for best pony on the days Rarity is busy having a Headache.

Seems like you're not getting a lot of responses to this. My schedule is pretty much packed for the next 4-5 weeks finishing up the school year (and it's going to be a very gruelling end-of-year), so I really don't think I can offer to pre-read myself. My current commitments to ponyfic are the absolute limit of what I can manage before summer, and I don't know what things will look like afterward.

That said, would you like me to ask around for you? I can talk to a couple people for ideas and maybe drop a blog post that will be seen by a few more eyes.

Yeah, that'd be great. I'd be very grateful for help on this front.

Here via Bradel. Also (unfortunately) woefully overcommitted. You've got some interesting-looking stories, though, and even if I can't preread anything I'll try to set aside the time to enjoy one.

I read both your stories and would definitely be interested in pre-reading anything you want to put in front of me.
