Here's to Derpy Doo

Today, I managed to get my hands (hooves) on a Keychain with everyone's favorite single mom pony, Derpy. Derpy is one character that I've actually been pretty pleased to see grow out of the fandom, because as a whole, they've made her a fairly inspiring story. She's (usually) a single mother with a lazy eye, a little bit of a clumsy nature, and yet she's always positive, bubbly, and hardworking. We aren't told what happened to her husband, although given the family friendly nature of the show, I've always assumed she's a widow of some kind (your mileage may vary there). For the most part, when given a fanfic, she comes out as a trying, determined, and fiercely optimistic mother/mare who faces her struggles with acknowledgement of her weaknesses and a grateful voice for those who need it along the way.

In any case, the mostly grown and responsible approach to her character has been one of the defining elements of the fandom to me. Derpy is a strong, compelling character in most of her appearances. Which is why I took great delight in her appearances in The Dusk Guard as a result, glad to be able to somewhat draw attention to her strong character and attitude. As a motivational icon, I think she's a great one for the fannon to have. She's become a background favorite for me, not as a representation of fan shout-outs or fan control, but for the character she's ended up becoming.
