DON’T FORGET THE MALTED MILK IMPOUNDMENTS

“Mommy, are you sure you know how to make a cake?” asked Velvet. The little lilac filly frowned at the thing that had just come out of the oven.

“Of course, sweetie,” lied Twilight, flashing her daughter a too-big smile.

“Is it supposed to be all black like that?”

Has it really been a year?

Well, look at that—I've been on this site for a year now. I've read over a million often beautiful words, and I've written . . . well, not nearly as many as I'd hoped to, but the important thing is that I am writing. I actively wrote original fiction when I was younger and dabbled with KotOR fanfiction, but at some point I stopped and didn't put pen to paper in earnest for a good six or

"Y'all" · 2:31pm Apr 4th, 2013

Isn't "y'all" plural? Call me crazy, but I always assumed it was a rustic elision of "you all," which would indeed make it plural. I don't understand why so many people write Apple family dialogue with "y'all" as a singular form of address.

Makes sense:

"Hey, girls," said Applejack, "y'all ready to go?"

Doesn't make sense:

"Twilight, y'all got a book on raisin' barns I could borrow?" asked Applejack.

To each his own.

Well, while that is true for the most part of having it be plural, there are instances in the show where AJ uses "y'all" when referring to one person.

Normally, using the word "ya" suffices for "you", however. But often times, you could just use "you".

"Twilight, ya' got a book on raisin' barns I could borrow?" asked Applejack.

Really? Huh.

AJ, Y U CONFUSE ME? :applejackconfused:

If you live in the south like I do, it's pretty common to hear those phrases.

But is "y'all" used as both singular and plural? I've always figured it was the latter. (Assuming it's used at all -- it seems like one of those stereotypical things that writers like to use to add "flavor" to their work.)

980531

No, just plural. But AJ had used it the other way around in the show.

Interesting. I'll have to keep an ear out.

Y'all is both singular and plural around here (Deep South). It varies by region.

"Y'all ain't got no business bein' here!" could be addressed to one pony, or several, or one pony out of a crowd.

In writing AJ, I first wrote everything phonetically: "Ah ain't gonna git mah hat back from y'all." Now I've (mostly) backed off the Ah and Mah and Git and Ya and phonetic spellings. Colloquial phrases and words are OK (ain't, y'all, etc.).

I'm deeply ambivalent about doing the full "countrified" routine with AJ's dialogue. On the one hand, she does have a distinct accent, and rendering it in text with phonetic spellings adds a degree of verisimilitude to her dialogue. On the other hand, it's easy to overdo, and it can make her seem more "country bumpkin" than she is. It's also a complete PITA to write. :ajbemused: I dunno; I suppose it's worth losing a little flavor to keep her character intact.

She had used it that way in the sleepover episode of the first season.

Y'all is a contraction of 'you' and 'all', and it is most often used a plural pronoun. Though, it can be both possessive and singular. Technically, all y'all is the plural of y'all.

I don't believe it has been accepted into any official dictionary, so there is no established proper usage.

I think it's a bit of both, to be honest. :derpytongue2:
