Like I said. Only one story to tell.
I said this before. Once Twilight becomes an alicorn, the state of fanfiction as a whole is going to go down the crapper. Why? Because there is only one story that you can tell with Alicorn Twilight.
Twilight outlives her friends and is sad.
That's the only story there is to tell now that she's an Alicorn. She's too overpowered now to have any trouble with regular, everyday tasks. She's too overpowered to have amazing adventures. Menial tasks no longer seem important in the face of her nigh-godhood. Any enemy will immediately fall to her Mary-Sue might.
There is but one more story to tell: "THE HORRORS OF IMMORTALITY"
We've already seen it a million bazillion times with Celestia... and now it's the only story we can tell about Twilight.
And yes, there will be variations on it. Sometimes, Twilight will be fine and will care for her friends' ancestors. Sometimes she'll go crazy and become the new Nightmare. Sometimes she'll become a Nymphomaniac and bed Luna. Sometimes she'll become violent and become a warrior princess or something.
But this is the only story left to tell now.
Goody.
And it's not even anywhere near the end of the day, and we've already gotten TWO of these fics at least! And that damnable episode only aired this morning.
EDIT: man, now people are even making animations about this
I did have *one* alternative idea, but alas I don't have the skills necessary to pull it off. It'd be a relatively serious fic, but alas I generally write goofy crap about idiot changelings and sentient paper clips. So not really compatible with what I do...
You are slightly off. There is one other story to tell. I'm talking about Twilight dealing with the responsibilities of a princess. The way the episode ended killed off the need for a Twilight learns how to fly story so other new story ideas with her will either have to either take her princessness away or have an insanely powerful villain to fight. The question is how will the show writers be able to continue the show believably.
P.S. If this response makes you want to rant again, please ignore it and focus on other things.
What? No. Immortality isn't horrible in the first place. Is life so bad that only death provides solace? Life is nothing but stories. Without endings, stories proliferate.

I know that, and you know that, but they don't know that.

Okay, that's fair. I'll concede there HAS been a distinct uptick in the 'whining about immortality' camp. I'm just hoping it will die down as people actually think about the issue. Twilight isn't an untouchably distant time abyss character. Nor is she whiny and prone to fits of angst. People will realize that the elements of harmony are immortal even if the element-bearers aren't.
Speaking of whiny and prone to fits of angst, I'm suddenly struck by and scared of the idea of an immortal Rarity. She'd milk the drama of immortality for all it was worth while while everypony else rolled their eyes.
