Definition in context: The thing of which has occurred recently has left me flabbergasted, confused, and disappointed all at the same time.
The season finale was... disappointing. Let me say why.
-It seems as though they had the problem fixed in no time at all.
That was strike one. Every pony episode before has taken longer to fix the "problem-of-the-week" than this one, thus giving it kind of a "it was rushed" sort of feel, with the "Oh, easy! I got a solution RIGHT HERE and HANDY! :D". Not too deep a storyline in my opinion.
-The songs... The whole episode was a musical. Was it happening in the story? They had music for it.
That was strike two. I'm not a fan of musicals, so that might be biased... BUT, the problem is that they strayed away from the formula in a not so successful method. The music doesn't STICK like "Smile, Smile, Smile", or whatever else.
-The method by which she became an alicorn, although very shiny, seemed rushed too. Seriously. "Kerpoof! I'm an alicorn! :D"
That's strike 3.
You're out, finale. The underwhelming quality of this episode makes it my new least favorite.
Granted, it's not abysmal, but it just has an overall feeling of "Lets add another princess!" that in "A Canterlot Wedding", was very well hidden (presuming that was the motivation behind Cadence).
A few last words:
I'm sticking by the show until after the 1st episode of season 4, at least. This episode may have been iffy, but it can only get WAAAY better or WAAAY worse from here. By worse, I happen to mean more mediocre, because, perhaps foolishly, I do not yet believe it is possible for G4 to slip into bad.
Provided it does get worse from here, you won't see me leave this site. I won't stop drawing ponies either...
But I might drop the official show.
It might make me sadface, but just as I was a fan of "Jak and Daxter" (Good game. Go play it) and not "Jak 2", I might like season 1 and 2, and not season 3 or what comes after.
So what would I do with a series that turned sour? I'd drop it. Simple. I won't even be terribly mad where they took it, just disappointed.
Either way, this series will certainly be different. Different-yet-fantastic or different-and-shameful, but different none the less.
Chiao!
PS: Seriously tho, you guys shoulda seen this coming, cuz when you consider the target demographic is for young females who happen to like pretty princesses a lot, they're going to do something huge to have more pretty princesses.
Not that I happen to dislike pretty princesses, it's just that there will be some for the sake of them, and there will be some for story advancement. I suppose you can debate amongst yourselves which is the case here.
