I Chatted with some folks on a server and sorta came up with a theory that about Spike's possible origins.

In season 9, episode 9, "Sweet and Smokey", we learn that all the dragon eggs gathering in the "Hatching Grounds", and it's the Dragonlord's job to make sure they hatch. It's possible that the Dragonlord watching over the batch of eggs that has Spike in it (probably Torch) got distracted, and some egg eating creature stole it, but said egg goes on a "journey" across Equestria before winding up in Canterlot. Pretty much the opening to Disney's Dinosaur. Plus, ponies claim they don't know much about dragons, so Spike not hatching was because he wasn't near lava, as ponies can't swim in it.
