A few further musings on a theory I came up with some time ago (which I admit don't really hold up, but still wanted to share)... · 11:18pm Sep 21st, 2023
So... for a bit of context, some time ago I proposed a possibility about the exact origins of a certain artifact seen in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Sunset's Backstage Pass. And one of the theories I proposed for the reason it ended up in the human world was a character who was never seen on-screen besides a drawing, but was alluded to in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Forgotten Friendship.
And well... I'm not sure why, but I couldn't help but wonder if we actually may have seen this character in the series (or more specifically, the sequel series), although again, I acknowledge that it's admittedly quite a bit of a reach for two reasons, which I will elaborate on farther below.
All the same, I couldn't help but wonder... is it possible that the "evil sorceress who was practically invincible" and ended up being stopped by Clover the Clever was Opaline? Because they sure have a lot in common. If Opaline is not being an unreliable narrator, she has been around since the days of Celestia and Luna. She is an evil sorceress. And as an alicorn, she would fit the practically invincible type for sure.
It's true that this theory has one very glaring problem: the sorceress portrayed in the piece of parchment was an earth pony, not an alicorn, or even a unicorn. And there certainly is nothing wrong with earth ponies being evil sorcerers (I mean, other than the fact that being an evil sorcerer is bad). But if one wanted to go there, it's possible that Opaline would have been able to use a glamor to disguise herself as an earth pony, which one could say she would have had reason to do, considering Celestia and Luna (or their parents, if they were still alive) could recognize her.
All the same... this idea also has the problem that the altercation with the evil sorceress appears to have been from before the founding of Equestria, and at that point in time, Celestia and Luna either weren't born yet or were very young, so Opaline herself might have been too young and inexperienced to be 'evil sorceress material', if she was even born herself. And this one is less easy to explain away, unless one fudges the timeline, which... well... may not be the best thing to do, so to speak.
So, all things considered... I admit it doesn't really hold up, and for that and other reasons, I doubt I will go anywhere with this in my AU... but still, I thought I might share it.
Any input from whoever would like to give it is welcome. :)
Thank you to all who took the time to read this.
As always, I hope all is well with all of you.
Best regards, and take care. :)
It's not a bad idea, but it's a little implausible. Probably just as well that it's not utilized. Still, I've had similar thoughts.
That said, where did you get the idea that the sorceress was an earth pony?

Thank you for your feedback. :)
And well... I got the idea that the sorceress was an earth pony from the fact that when we first see her in *Forgotten Friendship* in the piece of scroll, she is shown without a horn or wings, which would suggest she is an earth pony.
In hindsight, though, I admit it's not a perfect way to draw that conclusion, to say the least. After all, Clover the Clever is also depicted without his horn even though we know he's a unicorn, and he's also depicted as goldish light-brown even though the Gameloft game depicted him as green, if one takes the Gameloft designs as canon (which I admit for me is a very case by case basis).
One can say the artist was trying to save time considering that Clover was wearing a hood, but the sorceress also was wearing a Somnambula-esque head garment as per her depiction in the scroll, so her horn could be meant to be covered too, despite the different type of head garment. I wrote she was an earth pony under the assumption that the difference in head garment meant her horn would be visible if she had it, but I now realize it was a mistake.
And I now also realize, it's possible that a depiction of the sorceress not in the specific scenes I checked (the ones with Sunset and Twilight at the restricted section) actually shows her with a horn.
So, in light of all those things... I do still think she may have been an earth pony, but I shouldn’t have been so clear to label her as such, and I should have remembered to lay out all these points and remembered to check all the relevant scenes before saying with certainty that she was.

That's fair. Me, I have my own theories, and I'll keep them to myself for now.

Well... I confess that your statement has made me curious, but rest assured, I respect your wanting to keep your theories to yourself for now. :) That said, I look forward to reading them, once you share them somewhere or include them in your fics.
