    Behind-the-page: Relapse

    Hiya, lovely peeps!

Welcome to Behind-the-page, the series where I give you background information on my newest release. On today’s spotlight, we have: Relapse!

So, first story on the year on the tail end of April. Suppose I’m going to be a little slow on stories this year as compared to last year. But no matter.

The Absolute Best of Heartstrings - Shelf 1

    Hiya, lovely peeps!

I love the written word. I love books and fanficiton and blogs; I just love reading in general. When I first picked up reading in 2016, I expected stories to be just that - stories. There’s a plot, characters do this and that, reach climax and end plot. I didn’t know that ‘themes’ and ‘depth’ and ‘feels’ were ever in those stories.

I’ve never been glad to more wrong.

    The Full Year - 2023

    Happy New Year, lovely peeps!

    (A month late, but whatever.)

Six months ago, I made a blog recapping everything I’ve done for the first half of 2023. And since the new year has come, it’s time for the recap of the latter half of the year.

Recreating Old Art - Part 1 · 5:07pm Aug 17th, 2023

Hiya there, lovely peeps!

This is Part 1 of a new series where I recreate old art.

By ‘old’, I mean art pieces I made a while ago and that I’m thoroughly unsatisfied with. We’ll start with this one.

Essentially, what I wanted to achieve here was a tribute to all four Hogwarts Houses - surprise, surprise, I’m a big Potter head - by showcasing their colors, mascots and corresponding elements.

It… did not turn out the way I had hoped.

The animals I drew were horrible. I was trying to make them look vertical, but clearly I failed. There's also the four images at the top of each section (the sun, the star, the flower and the moon) which I tried to look like gems, but they're tacky.

And let's not even talk about the nearly unreadable text, with its large stripes and Rye font.

Even if you folks think the drawing isn't half bad, I don't like it. And when I don't like an art piece, I remake it.

Introducing… The Hogwarts House V2.0!

This time, I went for a more elegant, tapestry-like design in reference to Hogwarts' medieval decorations.

The elemental background is more subtle, the animal drawings look infinitely better and the sun, star, flower, moon designs are far smaller and at the bottom, where they can't be seen unless you zoom it.

A few changes have been made as well. I included the first letter of each House as well as their core values. The colors are more saturated and vibrant and the entire design is background-less.

I love this new image and it’ll proudly hang in my art gallery.

That’s all, lovely peeps! Here’s a link to more unsatisfactory art pieces and let me know if you want me to recreate them.

I do like that new design! The old piece, while possessing a pleasing quality of singularity in a poster format, was sort of garish. The new piece is less unified, but that's not necessarily a bad thing; having each separate house on their own banner makes each design more stark and memorable. It helps to reflect the existing imagery as well, in that the houses are separate and often in contention.

...I think. I'm not huge into Harry Potter, so I'm sort of flying blind with my misappropriated understandings. :twilightsheepish:

Either way, it looks good! Your skill in graphic design continues to impress me!

Ooh, very nice job, I could totally see those being used as bookmarks or something! Always happy to see another Potterhead around these parts!

Now thatʼs a neat idea. I do have a Ravenclaw House Edition copy of Deathly Hallows, and a bookmark sounds nice. And fun fact: I actually became a Potterhead in 2020, when I watched all eight movies, for the first time, in one go.

Thank you for the kind words.

Always appreciate your comments, Jinx.

In the world of Harry Potter, the houses are all part of the Hogwarts family, but their ideas clash so often that they feel like different schools entirely. For someone whoʼs not huge in the fandom, youʼre not far off.

And thank you so much for the kind words.
