North And South Chapter Nine · 9:18pm Feb 23rd, 2023
Hoo boy this one's been delayed a fair bit, my mistake y'all.
Not too much to talk about, the two battles mentioned in this chapter were both very short, very simple, and thus relegated to off-screen. I don't know why the CSA keeps throwing the same four corps (really two corps now in size, if I'm being honest) at me when they have two VERY large corps sitting across from Twilight and Trixie that could absolutely ruin my day, but I believe in gifts.
We begin with Lightning Charm Getting attacked. The Rebels charged me as I got my line set up, and so I mollywhopped them.
The only pertinent mid-battle image for this fight (THIRD Staunton). I drew up around the fences on the Northwest side of Appomattox Courthouse, and they just marched up to me - and then got shot to hell by Shimmer's Whitworths and Cloud Skipper and Starry Night's Sharps Rifles.
Typical CSA L. Ol' Beauregard is still running the South Carolina State Militia, it seems. About the only thing of note in these fights is that they keep abandoning their artillery trains either partially or wholly and giving me more good cannons. Yay?
Typical Union W. Let's hope this keeps up into the Wintertime. Yeesh.
We also pass the Enrollment act, which is the Union version of the Enlistment act. Conscripted regiments and brigades have lower morale than their volunteer counterparts and decrease state support when mustered, BUT, they do not lower morale when being used to reinforce volunteer units. Generally, I use conscripted troops to replenish my volunteers, and run my army as primarily a volunteer force. It tends to work well for me.
Battle FOUR for Staunton. They really want me out of Central Virginia... Of note here is that the Army of Tennessee is no longer led by General Phillip Zolicoffer - meaning he's either been injured, or killed in battle.
I'd moved Lightning South a bit to cover Tempest's retreat back north (she lost over half her army's size when enlistment terms ended, and is currently re-mustering replacements, a process that takes about a month or so) meaning that we see a slightly different battlefield this time. Yay.
More shooting, woo. This battle ended up pretty much the same as the last battle. Kind of boring to watch, unfortunately.
Another W for Charm, yay.
And we end off today with the official report. General Juniper Wood's running one of Lighting's Artillery Batteries, so good for him.
Next time, who knows what happens?
Hopefully good things.
