Day 3: A call to action! What is this outlining business all about anyway? · 5:22am Nov 27th, 2022

Three days in, and I'm still managing to chug along nicely, and even breaking my own expectations of myself when it comes to writing consistently. Seems I'm managing to average closer to 300 words a day as opposed to the 200 I set as the bare minimum. Technically, each of these blog posts add a considerable amount to that, but since these are unedited and just fly off my keyboard, they don't take up too much time.

Speaking of editing though, I've been doing a considerable amount of it, more than I expected for a daily writing goal of 200 words, and I'm starting to think that the reason for that lies beyond the regular human desire for writing, especially something meant for someone else, to be worthy of Goldilocks herself. I suck at planning.

Sure, I did my due diligence, looked up some resources, and got myself a pretty decent outline, but I seem to spend a lot more of my time in the weeds than I expect. This is probably definitely due to inexperience, so I figured that for the next couple of posts, I could try and pick the greater Internet's brain on the process of planning a short story.

Generally I hawk out a short description of my premise, then follow it along with moments within that premise that pop into my head as "I've definitely gotta include this", and then just fill the gaps in-between with whatever seems good at the moment. That works well enough for me, but how do you guys handle it?
