Don't worry, Shadow. I'm sure it's just a phase. · 3:51am Nov 19th, 2022

To be fair, having these absolute fire 2000's-style heavy metal headbangers as your boss fight themes is bound to have an effect on you.

Still haven't decided my favorite, and maybe I never will.

Still not openly discussing spoilers or story content; not sure how far along Phazon is with his playthrough.

I'm about halfway through the third island. Trying to hurry up though. As much as I'd love to clean up each island one at a time, I'm pretty sure I'm pushing my luck with spoilers, and there appears to be an unlimited number of just about every collectible except the Chaos Emeralds.

I think my concern about the Cyberspace levels is accurate though. As neat as it was to find a boost-style recreation of Green Forest from SA2, I don't think there are any unique level layouts.

As far as the boss music, I'll take Giganto's over Wyvern's. The latter is a headbanger, but kind of generic for its genre.

Yeah, I 100%'d the first island, then saw how many memory tokens Knuckles had, and went "screw this, I want to see the story before it's spoiled."

So... Frontiers locks story progression behind a pinball game. Where the objective is 5 million points and the starting point values are in the 3-digit range.

I'm maybe a half-hour into trying to clear it, and I seriously hope this doesn't single-handedly ruin the entire game for me. What the fuck was Sonic Team thinking?

The multiplier goes up significantly.

It took me two tries and ten minutes.

Yeah, second-worst part of the game to me.

5698997

40 minutes. Thankfully, the loop around the top of the board and the red rings are your best friends, but it was nerve-wracking at the end.

You know, when Sonic Mania pulled this kind of shit with the Mean Bean boss at the end of Chemical Plant, at least they made 300IQ genius Dr. Robotnik an idiot at Puyo Puyo, effectively making the boss brain-dead in its difficulty. Hell, I love Puyo Puyo, and I once double red beaned Robotnik on that board, so I would've loved an optional challenging version of that. But this was bullshit.

I'm sure I still have your worst part of the game to look forward to.

Are you playing on Hard?

That's the only way you'll encounter it.

5699012

Ah, the true final boss. I heard of that. Can I just play 99% percent of the game on Normal, and then switch at the end, or do I have to do the full run on Hard?

5699013
You can change at anytime.

I changed it after the first island.

5699015

Fair enough. Think I'll switch over to Hard at the very end, get the true ending, and maybe do a full playthrough on Hard. Not looking forward to redoing the damn pinball game, though.

5699016
Same. My next playthrough will likely be on hard and I'll try to 100% everything.

Done. Finally. Couple thoughts.

- Sage gets a nice character arc here, but she kind of irks me. So she refuses to tell Sonic why he shouldn't listen to the voices in his head, at first because she refuses to share intel with Eggman's arch-nemesis, but later because she figures nothing she tells Sonic will change his actions, his choices, or their consequences (even though some of the cutscenes just repeat that over and over again). But she didn't tell Eggman anything?! You would think "Sonic is about to release a nigh-unstoppable world-ending horror, the only safe place for you when it's unleashed is in Cyberspace, and the only way we could maybe stop it is if you two work together, like you have at times before." is something you'd want to report to your master.

That said, it'll be cool seeing her again in later games, and in the IDW comics.

- You can kind of see where the story is going once you realize that the Ancients bear a striking resemblance to Chaos 0. That said, so the Chaos Emeralds are of alien origin, but the Master Emerald is definitely ours? Okay, sure. Wait, why didn't the Ancients land on Angel Island? Or rather, the chunk of land that would later become Angel Island.

- So I found an article IDing which levels the Cyberspace stages pull from, and if it's to be believed, about a quarter of them are actually new. And between that and the little challenges to get the memory tokens, I see potential in the level design. You see shortcuts and alternate pathways, you can take advantage of the physics and terrain to skip portions of the levels. And while I've heard one of the issues in recent Sonic games (or at least Forces) is that the levels kind of play themselves, the level design in Frontiers actually kept me on my toes.

- I see Ian Flynn is still trying to fix what Sonic Forces did to Tails.

- I can take some consolation in the four good Super Sonic bosses the game gives us. But we needed a better final boss.

- Wait, did Amy just namedrop Sticks the Badger in the end? So we're calling back to Sonic Boom. I mean... I'm not that against it, but when are we getting Tangle the Lemur, Whisper the Wolf, or Belle the Tinkerer in one of these games?

So yeah, a couple of very questionable choices here and there, but solid game.

If they didn't land on Angel Island, the flashbacks certainly seem to suggest that they went there, and possibly built the Altar, and what was possibly Sky Sanctuary.

Not only the final boss, but the villain altogether needed to be better. Give me an ancient monster. Not an unknowable horror. Give me a rogue Ancient. Something.

And for the love of the franchise's various gods, DO NOT MAKE ME PLAY IKARUGA, PINBALL, OR ANYTHING OTHER THAN "SONIC PLATFORMING" IN MY SONIC GAMES.

That says a lot coming from me, because I've been saying playing as Tails in a Starfox setting would fit perfectly.

5699803

When you're shutting down the towers , the flashbacks show that some of the Ancients (we also needed a better name for them. Doesn't help that Sonic Boom had it's own lost ancient civilization called the Ancients.) fled to what would become Angel Island/Mystic Ruins when, um, "The End" came to this Earth. For a second, I almost though Angel Island would be revealed to be one of the Starfall Islands, except that would've been a plot hole.

You say that, but I hated the Tails mech stages in SA2. Though I have imagined Tails stages in a sort of SA1 style, but instead of making them races, just making them expansive to challenge Tails' flight ability. Maybe also give him a stomp attack to hop off of enemies and recover some flight time, if you have to give him a stamina bar for his flight. Or is that too similar to Sonic's Homing Attack chains?

Oh, almost forgot. The Knight's boss theme is a close second to me, but I still preferred Giganto's boss theme.

5699807
Well I'm not talking mech. Put him behind the controls of the Tornado. Biplane or jet, doesn't matter. Heck, put Sonic on the wings and make his homing attack one of the abilities. Like a missile attack, where the missile returns.

5699807
Oh, and Break Through It All (Wyvern) BARELY inches itself above the rest in my book.

Did you do the parry twice in a row that let's you throw that fucker against the mountain? Most badass Super Sonic moment by far.

5699809

I didn't notice that, but I could swear the second half of the Wyvern boss requires you to parry two consecutive attacks. Also kind of got sick of enemies requiring the parry. Doesn't help that my L button barely works, so it took me a while to realize that the parry move just requires you to hold the buttons instead of actually timing anything. Maybe I just need new Joy Cons. I mean, after 5 years, these haven't had the worst run.

5699812
I'm so used to timed parry as well. And I swear that just holding them and not worrying about timing, didn't work for me a bunch of the time, especially Vs Wyvern.

And now that you beat it, I can say: I'm honestly worried about Tails not being in the next game because he wants to go off on his own.

5699814

Fingers crossed for a Tails standalone game? We haven't had that since the 90's. Please don't make this plot point in Frontiers just lead into an IDW side story.

5699815
I have enough experience with Halo to unfortunately know that that's entirely possible.

Important plot points being wrapped up in books and comics, and the next game disastrously assumes you read everything.

5699819

And we got some information about upcoming DLC. A few small things and challenge modes for the first two rounds, but round three promises new playable characters and some story DLC. As interesting as it might be to see some other Sonic characters playable in the open world, part of me wonders if this could work as a test run for having other playable characters in future Sonic games.

5701035
I'm shooting for the moon, and hope to be able to play the entire game as other characters.

Extra super awesome bonus points if they give us their Super Forms. That'd be a first for Amy, and as for Super Tails and Knuckles, well, they haven't been seen since 1993 in 3D.

And, well, I want to be able to play Amy and throw seven Piko hammers into Giganto's face, Sonic X style.

5701080

That'd be a first for Amy, and as for Super Tails and Knuckles, well, they haven't been seen since 1994.

Okay, so we're not counting Sonic Mania? I mean, for fuck's sake, that game even gave Might and Ray super forms.

And, well, I want to be able to play Amy and throw seven Piko hammers into Giganto's face, Sonic X style.

Oh, I remember that. That would be awesome.
