This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

And we're off to start with a sinking ship, a storm (probably cultists) and a magical nullifiation island (yes, they will go there, no need to pretend otherwise)
Welp, I got my bi-weekly fix, I am happy, good chapter.
I can't really predict how things will evolve from there,I mean, things will go south as usual, but I can't tell in which order.
As long as Prey is fine, it's good for me.

I'm surprised nobody picked it up in the previous chapter. Several places in the story they've been mentioned, and described as nullzones.
I like the imagery in this chapter, really painted a picture.
I've been to places like this before, you've really nailed the feeling for it.
Oof. I am somewhat curious, but I generally prefer happy slice of life stuff. This seems to be not that. I've read some darker stuff (Fallout Equestria for example, Background Pony, the Negotiations verse, stuff like that). Would this be along those lines or is it even darker? And then there is the length.... Respect man, but it's rather daunting if you find the story only now.
It's the little things that make Prey so lovable.
Also the Border Rangers were delightfully annoying, thank you LP for delivering.

In answer and summary: There is slice of life, but not so much of it 'happy' per-say. This story is about Guard characters in Equestria, while the rest of the Mane 6 plot is the background. Also fairly dark, but probably not more so than Fallout Equestria.

I recommend reading the first nine chapters (the first arc) before making your judgement. It's a great introduction and should give you a good idea about what you'll be getting into.
It's not a hurricane forming, too cold by the sound of it, not saying it couldn't be another power sea storm though. Someone might be brewing a literal bomb cyclone. (pun intended but not to be funny.)
At this point... The ISND is cursed. Every mission they go on.
Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence and three times is enemy action.
Is Luna slightly prophetic or something and keeps assigning them these hellish missions?

It's not "that" dark, it's even quite the opposite in some way, this story is more or less the rehabilitation of a criminal who has to adjust to this new life.
The length isn't really an issue since it's well written and it's not one of those stories where you end up with a million characters that have their substories, it's almost exclusively about Prey and some other characters. That mean it's easy to start reading, take a break and pick it up again later, because you're not forcefed too much information.
From the description of the storm bank I'm reminded of Sky Tower from Pokémon mystery dungeon, though obviously made up of heavy rainclouds.
and it seems the first order of business is a possible shipwreck, though I expect the rangers are going to get huffy at Prey for not doing anything to help. That or one gets eaten by some example of a marine super predator.
Also 10 bits that this weeks cult is trying to ether summon some weather demon with all those clouds or make a super cloud golem.
How many chapters until the ponies at the harbor start turning into seaponies and sing a horror shoo be doo.
Other than that I do love seeing the squad interact more with outside their group. Since we are intimately familiar with the surface of ISDN, the clash I find is pretty interesting to see.
Recently I also been rereading lord of mysteries which I find sort of similar to the story here with the mcs being overly cautious and focusing on preparation. I do consider both these stories to be my favorites for the characters.

Most likely. Whatever her thought process is, it doesn't rely on logic in this story; so, some sort of insight required to produce right decisions as she does.
I'm going to guess there's some really old cranky villain on the isle of dove that really doesn't like tourists.
the whole “thestral equivalent of cloudsdale” discussion might be foreshadowing, if you take into account just how huge that storm cloud probably is, how its been staying in the same spot for a while, and how another cloud that was said to be headed towards it was said to be like it was on a leash.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I'll toss it in my read later and see what happens. Knowing myself, I'll probably give it a go sooner rather than later and if I do enjoy it I'll definitely catch up.

I can just imagine it now:
"And I would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling guard and your talking Shih Tzu."
At one point, Prey asks if Gloom has any idea and the sergeant answers 'yes', but he clearly means 'no'- the rest of his speech at that time makes more sense if it's 'no', anyway. But now I can't find it, so maybe I'm misremembering or something.
A sinking ship huh?
Yea that's a bad sign, could it be pirates?
A shallow reef?
Yes they could get caught in a storm, but if they're actively sinking then that means there's a hole in their boat, storms capsize ships, or tear them in half, they don't punch holes in the hull and cause it to sink slowly, something wrong is going on here.
There goes any and all hope this is a normal case,

I suddenly have a sense of foreboding. Not the kind that follows Prey around like a cartoon stormcloud, but the actual kind that comes before a character's death. The Border Rangers surely are doomed, but there are two more flyers who might be getting close to death this arc: Gloom and Crimson. Though both have plot armor, we've seen Prey more or less bring the "dead" back to life, albeit at a cost.
Loss of limbs / what makes ponies special has been an especially brutal theme in this story. What if we see ponies lose their wings here, such as Trail Blazer, or even Gloom?
Ah yes, a mysterious island surrounded by geographical anomalies, a sleepy port town, what will no doubt be constant rain, a mysterious, suspicious family of some importance and the sound of wails in the wind. Business as usual then yeah? Though a part of me will long for the police drama-esque bits, can't wait to see what Lovecraftian horror comes out of this.

LB heavily point at the sky, the rain and the wings for the past two chapters Indeed.
Every chacacter is also conveniently flying, and yes, ''no magic'' also mean ''no flying'' (and no message in a bottle, no runes, no mindleeching).
Prey never pointed how vulnerable he was like this before, not as much anyhow.
And I think we're being tricked by the fate of those guards, they're not introduced just for the shock factor :"oh look, now they aren't cocky and they ded'' that would be too convenient.
And LB doesn't deal in concenience.

This is why you don’t suddenly stop the sacrifices to the unknown fish people.
Plus, if you’re in on it, you’ll get super rich and may even get married to one of them.
11050180
Yea, just look at what happened to Lilly, one way or another the Border Rangers are going to experience some character growth right to the face at mach speeds.
Maybe it will result in their death, maybe not.
Ahh, it's back! I thought we had seen the last of this from Gloom.
Ever hear tell of a shoggoth?
... I am not ready for whatever horrible abomination from the sea is going to appear and worry my dreams. Which means that I exactly as ready as I need to be.

A woolly Shih Tzu.

Well, Luna must have something going for her, even if it is pure dumb luck. She's an alicorn after all. You gotta' get lucky to win the jackpot and get immortality and goddess powers.
11049448
Thanks. 😊 Yes, I was also trying to capture in writing the real life experience of a visit to a costal beach just like this one. 🌊
I am having a bit of trouble relating to the mission due to the amount of stuff that is hanging loose back in Canterlot, and even if they pull everything out fine from the jaws of destruction does it really matter to the 'heroes' in the end?
Just a hoof stomping on their face again.
Pre-chapter comment… oh no. Alliteration is never a good sign
Hmm, suspicious townsfolk, and a lot massive weather problem that’s been building for weeks? Something’s not right here….
11049514
Agreed, I remember starting this story and being shocked at how the story twisted what I thought it was going to be about into something utterly unexpected
11051011
The point is the rest of the job.
I find it really suspicious the royal guard decided to offer a team made of pegasi without a single unicorn for an investigation for exemple.
I fear the hidden agendas.
Glad to see that the remnants remain i thought they were wiped by harmony
11051599
Makes sense to make pegasi-only weather team. Investigation team is thestral, pegasus and little sheep.
And seeing how bad weather is, i shudder to imagine the disaster investigation gonna be.
Question: How long is Prey's tail?
Something I just learned is that sheep have naturally long tails. Farmers dock them in order to prevent the sheep from developing fly strike, a potentially lethal disease that develops from sheep's poop ending up on their tails. But as a sapient organism, Prey is (hopefully) potty trained at the age 71. No real need to mutilate a creature that can wipe it's own ass. I don't remember if there ever was explicit mention anywhere in the story about his tail. So is Prey's tail long or is it short?
peta2.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/lamb-with-long-tail-2.jpg
11058018
In my head, it's always been the short kind, although yes I am aware of sheep's tails being born naturally long.
11058479
In that case I figure he decided to cut it off himself after it gave away his position to a border guard by sticking out of a bush or dangling out of a tree.
11058815
That's a good theory. I figured he either lost it from being attacked by a border guard or some creature. Or maybe it's cut off as part of a sheep cultural ritual... kinda like being circumcised. But I like yours better because it would be a very Prey thing to do. Although any way you slice it (pun intended), it's strange that nobody has asked about it. Guess we'll chalk that up to ponies knowing jack shit about sheep, or anyone else that's not a pony.
11059242
Perhaps if Gloom or Crimson notice that most sheep tails are longer, they might ask about it, I can only imagine Prey nonchalantly saying "Oh I cut it off" with no further elaboration.
11058018
Prey is probably a slightly different species from our farm sheep, same way as MLP ponies aren't really ponies and humans aren't monkeys. If there were no differences, he would also face a wool trimming problem and too limited joint movement range.
11059396
Those are also certainly good points to raise.
soon.
11062418
😅 "E'heh heh... soonish?"
Chapter soon, very soon, no need to worry guys, as long as the itch doesn't crawl up your elbows you'll be fine.
I'm not hooked, I can stop checking here every 3 minutes anytime I want.
I just don't want to
11064872
Maybe not very soon, but soon, hopefully.
