This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

Aaaaah...
Feels always good to have my fix.
I mean, reading a new chapter.
I always like when they work alongside another team, it always put some contrast, this time it's a team of overconfident optimistic guards, surely nothing will go wrong when the brown matter will hit the fan, I can already see the time where the two leaders will collide over a simple harmless red herring.
And the changeling genocide still weight on Prey, the poor guy repeating over and over "it's not my fault, they did it first" to the point where he voiced his worries to the single living being that has an information he already gave, with no indication which one it is.
Great chapter, next one will be in a port town, without much tourism.
We already got cues about "underwater plants", the main town's activity is boat repairs and the last words of this chapter are about algae and sea water (when it started with a plant under the sun)
Fhtagn, I don't like where this is going.
It would help visibility, one arc for each book could be a simple solution, I'm all for increasing the popularity of one of the best stories I've read here.
God an amazing chapter like always.
And yes I think it would be wise to split the story up.
edit: what's with the dislike?

Yeah, once the story's done I could go back and edit the chapters at the start, and the beautified version could be released as a book an arc, or something along those lines.
Kind of funny you put it on Halloween.
I personally like it all being one big book, the different events and relevant happenings interweave through different arcs in a way that I think would become hard to follow and confusing if arcs were isolated into their own books.
Plus I like it when books have lots and lots of words for me to read, and thus am biased against anything which might make a nice long book even look shorter.
It depends, to split the story up, it would be hard for some readers to know it split up, but to keep it together, it would seem impossible to catch up to. I would prefer keeping it in one story, but it is up to you!
I'd personally prefer the story in one book. For me the length is not deterring, but a sign that there is a lot of wonderful story to read.
If you have no reliable support, you better bring some.
It's a Halloween chapter!
I'm ready to be thoroughly spooked, 🎃
I could see splitting each arc or 2 into a book.
Oh wow, three chapters in a month!
i.ibb.co/GH1bY9Q/121135004-667644147516619-5170992311525198910-n-190849628.jpg
And I think you should keep it one book. I usally find it more hard to get into a story when there's a few other books I have to read before hand.
Here we go again, off into the unknown I have a feeling things aren't gonna go according to plan
IMO size is fine. It means there's a lot of good story to read
I'm really looking forward to the Shadow Over Haven Hay arc. I have a feeling that despite those cars being completely empty, plant zombie time is around the corner.
Splitting the story could be a good idea. Just don't split it too much. I remember being irritated at the Freeport Venture series, because it was all split up into small slivers and it got confusing to navigate.
Also if it brings more likes and Readers that's good. This story deserves more. Heck isn't that the whole motivation to split it up? Helping new Readers get into the story.
The details of the mission did hit me with a sense of deja vu alongside the ISDN, but they are missing the voivepedes due to the brotherhood. A shame the wikerwatch isn't mobile with its thousands of changeling bodies attached to it to battle what horror may come next. The anticipation is gonna weigh hard on me. I will always be looking forward to the next chapter.
For the book I think it should be kept as one. I don't mind the word count either way. I just think that none of the arcs give a sense of finality. Unless you want to spook people a completed story where it hints prey dying like in a previous arc.
I think three books would be to much I like it being just one story.
I don't think it needs to be broken up. People who are interested will read a long story. Though I may be biased because I very much enjoy well written long stories...
This chapter was good! Gloom warning Prey about creepy nursery rhymes had me chuckling. Very genre savvy there.
Also, good to see that Prey is properly paranoid.
I definitely think it should stay as one book. I don't know about others but, I find that when I'm looking for a good story to read I pay attention to word count being higher. Especially if the story is ongoing.
Ooh, I'm getting a real Innsmouth vibe from how Haven's been set up I'm hoping for either a siren cult or absolutely nothing happening beyond maybe Prey's two carts of sewer zombies getting discovered.
Glad to see I'm not the only one getting Innsmouth vibes from this new mission; whether or not we're about to encounter some Lovecraftian shenanigans remains to be seen.
As for whether or not this should be split up, I can see both sides of the argument. I would personally like if it just stayed as one story, but I'm up for whatever you think is best. I just don't want all of the discussions and memes here in the comments to be lost if you did decide to split it up.
You're probably polling the wrong group. I'd be surprised if there are many readers of this more-than-a-million-words-long story that are either deterred by or dislike length (since, you know, it's unlikely those kind of people would read a more-than-a-million-words-long story).
Prey brought some extra security it seems
Multiple books, like a trilogy or something, usually builds anticipation for the readers.
Especially is each are long and thoroughly high quality.

How funny would it be that Prey unintentionally pours gasoline onto the fire, especially with the memory-shard of that god-shaped-hole he's got in his noggin.
Gloom turned to Prey, "Alright Prey, something weird is going on. Got any advice?"
"Ḍ̴̢̞͆̓͋r̷͖̭̈̈́̚e̶͔̖͝a̷̧̦̪̔̈́m̵̛̱̮̞̔̚s̸̢̈ ̷̥̓͗͛̃ă̶̫̤̱̭̈͋͆ṙ̸̦̮̤̈́̂ê̵̠̹̤̮̔͘ ̴̹̖̓͑̇͛m̴̖̲͓̈̍̐͘e̶̞̗̣͍̐̀̌͠s̷̖̚s̶͙̃͠a̴̖͒̀̏g̵̯̙̣͐͘ȩ̸̠͛̓s̵̭̻͈̹͌ ̷̛̟͖͍̉͝f̵̟̉̈́r̸̡̯̻̽͑͐̆o̵̥͎̰̘̊͒m̶̱̼̜͂̍̿̋ͅ ̴̯̹͕́̍͘͜͝t̴̜̞̲͙͊̈h̶̦͐̅ͅé̵̡̋̓ ̶̭̠͎̞̾d̴̖͋̀̕é̴̢̛͎̣̮͗e̴̙̠͚̣̓̅͝ṕ̸̧̬̤̱̎͂."
Gloom blinked, ".... We're fucked."
I think splitting it up would be nice, especially for new readers. I had put off reading it because of its length for a while - and that was back when it was only at chapter 40-ish. I took me a while to get through it, but it was worth it in the end. I can't imagine how taunting a million word, soon-to-be 100 chapter fic looks like for some new readers.
Treating the different arcs as their own stories sounds good though. A semi-clear conclusion to each story in a saga.
To me, splitting seems a bit pointless. There is little appeal in splitting web novels. It's best to do it if the ending of each book is wrapping up the main story of the book, but that won't work well here.
As for attracting new audiences. Ironically, I believe it might be counter intuitive. Seeing as this is intended to be a slow and long story, dressing it up as a bunch of shorter stories strung together might attract the wrong audience (the kind who won't find that in this story) and deter the intended audience (the kind who seek these types of books).

Pretty sure the last little paragraph about smells and such is a big wink wink that Prey brought some of his Wickerwatch Zombies, though, it could of course have dual meaning.
Something has changed within prey and i cant tell if it is because harmony or himself
Splitting the story up seems like it would require a lot of work for not much of a real point. It'd be easy enough if all you were going to do was give each arc its own "book", but if you aren't going to put in the work to make each arc stand fully on its own then what's the point of splitting them up in the first place? And splitting it into three? Where exactly do you arbitrarily assign the beginnings and endings?
Although, I gotta admit that I feel really uncharitable about people who look at something that would take time and effort to get through, and instead decide not to bother at all. They're stumbling at the very first, and tiniest of hurdles: why cater to their bad habits?
Perhaps you could keep this as 1 book as the master story with the smaller books as copies.
Yay, new adventure! We spent so much time in Canterlot that I was beginning to miss them. It’ll be interesting to read if Prey will have any kind of reaction when he sees the ocean for the first time. Maybe there is some kind of natural museum 🤔, I remember him mentioning that he wanted to research about octopuses. And Crimson had a story about his father and the sea that may be referenced…
But most likely an Eldritch abomination will rise from the sea and destroy the entire town.
About the poll, I’m more on the side of keeping it as a single story, I think it would be difficult to separate the arcs as stand-alone fics. (And I also prefer this type of longer fics, I don't know if I would have started reading it if it was split)
I don't see any issue in splitting the chapters as long as it is based on arcs. Since the arcs are not self contained you would need to decide whether to insert a new intro at the start of each book or just say 'dont read without reading the first books'.
This story doesn't feel like multiple books to me, not content wise. I'd keep it as one big story. Some people (points to self) actually intentionally seek the long ones. It's an attraction.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the idea (splitting up the story), but it is possible that it would help with new readers. End of the day, you do what you think you need to. Either way, always happy to see an update!
I say keep it as a long form story.
It's good to see after Discord's attacking Equestria and the changelings going after Prey, the INSD are getting back to their usual weirdness.
I'm wondering how long will it be before Celestia or Luna figure out Prey is a mind leech? Or if one or both know and they're trying to see if they can bend one to their will? If neither of them knows, what happens when another pony figures out he's one, what will that spell for our favorite runt sheep?
It would probably be useful to split it up if you want new readers.
Split the story up? Uhhh-
Thinks back at how difficult it was simply to find a piece of information in each chapter with ctrl+f
Sheer length is a bit intimidating, but it was an absolute win when I found this story. I always preferred to be reading long(200k+) stories, long enough I can enjoy it while I can, and then drop it later when I get bored without minding much rather than reading a short story, enjoy it, and then having it end incomplete never seeing a new chapter.
Even if the story were, say, 15-60k words long and marked as complete, I'd still sometimes turn those down because of how fleetingly short it is. Complete and with an ending, yes, but it leaves me still craving me.
To sum it up, I'd rather enjoy then get tired of a story than enjoy it, and either have it end incomplete forever or be complete but crave more.
It really depends on how people prefer their story. Hmm, makes me wonder what most people on fimfiction prefer. Do they prefer to get tired of a story and enjoy what they can, or enjoy a story but lose it forever... Now that'd be a good poll for looking at what kind of audience fimfiction as a whole has.
I personally prefer longer stories, and I'm not sure if splitting it up actually helps people be more interested. I mean, back in 2015, sure, but these days? I think it mostly spreads by word of mouth and a little bit of help from the featured box.
Up to you though, I have certainly heard people react with trepidation at the number. It's also fun to say "it's longer than the bible, but it's engaging the whole way."
I propose the opposite: join the entire fic into one, singular, giga-chapter.

Well, after reading what everyone has said about splitting the story or not, most people have voted on the side of leaving the story unsplit, so that is probably what I am going to do. Thank you for sharing your feelings on what was best everyone, though. 😊

I don't know what that reference is, so I'll look it up, but if it's about Cuthulu, then I get it. And that's funny, too. 😆

My pc has a hard time opening up a chapter 200k long, no way it's going to hold for something nearly six times that.

Where is this 200k long chapter you speak of?

I'm a simple man. I see a new chapter of "Prey and a Lamb", my day gets better.
As for splitting up the story. If someone judges whether he should or shouldn't read the story based solely on its length and not what's it about... That's just sad.
Let them miss out on the glorious read, I say.
Always the highlight of my day when this updates. Good to see the team go back out on a mission again, its always a treat to see them all together interacting.
From Prey's POV the rest of eternity wouldn't be long enough.

Now I’m biased and a bit odd. For some reason I prefer to read massive incomplete stories over a series with 4 books and a partial third. Maybe it gives me the impression of an author trying to spice up their click count but *shrug* I’m odd.
Also, your markers dictating arcs and chapter positioning is quite helpful navigating IMO
Excellent chapter as usual! I love prey growing to care more about his group… This… is gonna be FUN! Although I’m surprised no one commented on the poison damage the ISND have…
Thanks for the chapter. Split or not I don't have a strong opinion.

Thanks. Also, as most people have voted against splitting the story, I don't think I will be.
Nah keep it as it is, any reader who balks on reading size and not quality of the reading not worth thinking about
