The current cease-fire is a real mixed bag. It's not being followed much by either side, but it has reduced the intensity of the conflict. One NATO official has called it a cease-fire "in name only".

Also, Russian protesters in Moscow protested their country's unofficial involvement in Ukraine. The protest was government-sanctioned, which means that it wasn't illegal. This comes after President Putin and state-owned media warning against internal traitors.

Russian forces have made incursions into Ukrainian territory, though it denies any involvement. The political stratagem currently being employed is similar to that used during the USSR's 1940-1941 Winter War with Finland. Propaganda claimed that the only intervention was the delivery of humanitarian aid, while military forces were engaging in combat.

The black boxes recovered from the shot down airline have been recovered and transferred to London for study. This comes after resistance and some disorganization on the part of the rebels, which delayed the transfer. The bodies of many, if not most, of the Dutch passengers have been returned to their home country.

Three days ago, a Malaysian Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over southeastern Ukraine. The plane was a Boeing 777-200ER, flying at an altitude of about 33,000 ft (10 km). Satellite data and civilian accounts indicate the missile was fired from between the villages of Torez and Snizhne.
