We never actually get a lot of backstory for him. All we really know is that he is a unicorn and 1000 years ago he took over the crystal empire, was disintegrated into shadow by Celestia and Luna and was subsequently banished, and then put a curse on the Crystal Empire that caused it to disappear for a thousand years. And that's basically the extent of our knowledge.
