“Itachi.” said teenager stopped his walk and turned to see ‘Madara’ warp into existence, with a girl held, bridal style, in his arms.
“Madara.” He greeted. All three were in standard Akatsuki wear-the black, high collar cloak, with red clouds scattered around it.
“Why are you here?” Itachi asked.
“I happened across this little tart in my Other Dimension. I told you about it, correct?”
“Yeah.” Itachi shrugged him off, looking interestingly at the child.
“Now, you’ve no doubt noticed how... peculiar she is. She’s from another dimension. If she didn’t pass through the Other Dimension, she would retain her original form. No doubt, it lead to some memory loss.” ‘Madara’ continued, “But, you know I’m a busy man. I cannot raise a child.”
“And that’s where I come in?” Itachi asked, and ‘Madara’ nodded.
“I figured this would be a good olive branch. I even went ahead and gave her a sharingan and a small syringe of Uchiha DNA.” He handed her over, “But, there’s a catch to this. She’s probably going to be taken from us by her ruling monarch. She was, afterall, from another dimension.”
“...I understand. To be honest with you, I’ve always wanted a sister.” Silence. “That was a joke.”
“Oh...” ‘Madara’ said, lamely. He wasn’t used to Itachi joking around like that. If anything, he was the one to play straight man. “Just... see this as an opportunity to have a real sibling relationship. If not, just keep her alive until I have use for her. Or, she’s taken back. Any of those outcomes work for me.”
“No need to worry about having a worthless foot soldier, Madara.” Itachi said, shifting her in his grasp, “I’ll... take this opportunity. Thank you.” Itachi gave a head nod, “Perhaps I misjudged you.”
“Heh... I’m still a liar. And I’m still planning for war. I just look out for my fellow Uchiha.” He began to warp out of existence, “See you later, Itachi.” Itachi stood in silence for a few moments as the girl slept peacefully.
“Perhaps having you isn’t that bad of an idea... Someone to confine to...” He gave a ghost of a smile, and he began to walk back to his shack on the borders of the Land of Fire.
He held her bridal style the entire walk, looking at her purple hair with a magenta stripe on one side. Along with her pale skin, it was a heartwarming sight. After an hour or so, his abode was in sight. It wasn’t anything magnificent, just a normal, wooden shack. A kitchen, dining area, bathroom, and a single bedroom. He’d have to add a room for her.
It may have been two months since he joined the Akatsuki, but they knew where to find him, so a letter was expected after a weekend of bounty hunting. He picked it up on his way into his house with his index and middle fingers, and sighed, thinking of where to put her.
The couch! He thought, mentally slapping himself in the face for forgetting the couch he had for those weekends he couldn’t get out, and... sleepless nights. He kept it so he could read away from the bed, and books were scattered on the tables and shelves. He kept his floor clean, though. He put her down, and opened the letter, read it, then burnt it, as per protocol. It was a normal update on the Akatsuki’s goals, and a congratulatory letter on his string of successes. All protocol for higher Akatsuki members. He looked over at the girl, and noticed she was still sound asleep.
Well, might as well cook in the meantime... He thought to himself, Should take the cloak off and give her a blanket before that. And that’s what he did. The standard Akatsuki undersuit(a grey mesh under a blue v-neck tee with a sash around the waist, and the same color pants) was under the cloak, and he got out a(rather comfortable) black blanket he kept around. She seemed to enjoy the blanket, as her face let out a slight smile. That was good.
Now, Itachi was never one to cook, as he could never work a stove. So, a majority of his favorite foods were things he didn’t have to put on the house-burning demon, namely rice and cabbage. Cabbage was always nice.
He poked around his fridge, trying to remember where it was exactly he left the cabbage, and began to hum a little tune. And then, just as he found it, he heard her wake up with a sharp intake. He gave in inward sigh, and left the cabbage in the fridge, preferring to have it cold. He walked over to the couch, and sat down on the other side to the frightened child. Her eyes were large and purple, and fixated on Itachi.
“Do you remember your name?” She shook her head, “Do you remember anything?” She shook her head.
“Very little. Just... very vague images.” She replied, and he nodded.
“Just as Madara predicted.” He said, under his breath, “Very well. I am Itachi Uchiha, one of the last Uchiha. I’m part of the criminal organization, Akatsuki, but only to ensure that the Hidden Leaf is safe from harm. That is all you need to know.” Itachi said, coldly, and she nodded quickly, “Now then, you’re going to need a name, aren’t you?” He asked, getting up, and reaching for a weathered book, and flipping through the pages. Before stopping on one.
“This... is one of my favorite tales. It got me through the Third Great Shinobi War, and made me the man I am today.” She listened, “The tale of this singular pony’s adventures to unite an entire country against tyranny, using nothing more than her words and peaceful actions. It was through harmony, not war or death, that she was able to create a utopia for all to see. Evil is so minute, and happiness is all around... That is the world I want to see. The world I want to live in. I know that, despite my sacrifices, more must be made for this reality to be shared. Perhaps, if you are not taken from me by your reality... You can make that world happen. You can create the world I could not. I know that I won’t be able to see the reality alive, but...”
“What...do you mean by... ‘taken by my reality’?” Twilight asked.
“...Nothing.” He sighed, choosing not to tell her about her origins, “But, in the hopes you can create the world I can only dream of, I will name you after her.” He turned to look into her hopeful eyes, wondering just what he would name her.
“Twilight Uchiha. That is your name from now on.”
...I'd trust Orochimaru to watch over Twilight far more than Uchiha Itachi. At least Orochimaru is relatively honest with himself.
Itachi?
Itachi pulls off shit that makes Orochimaru look benign. He brutally murders his entire clan, from infants to the old, for the sake of "peace", traumatizes Sasuke to the point that Sasuke is a bitter, anti-social misanthrope, mind rapes Kakashi, mind rapes Sasuke again and puts him into a coma and then is revealed to be secretly "good" when his actions are sufficiently horrible enough that no villain has ever yet reached that scope.
Itachi is a Hero with an F in Good. His history would horrify Twilight; instead of attempting to ask for mercy for his clan or just to kill the would-be usurpers, he slaughters everyone like hogs and then starts off Sasuke's descent into insanity.
Well, arguably Pain, King of All Massive Overreactions, is far worse.
Also, it's Hoshigaki Kisame, not Hoshikagi.

(Knew I'd misspell it. NonDocs Spell Check sucks like that.)
And, actually, in the 4th Great Ninja War, he stops the reanimation jutsu... That's something. *shrug*. And, everyone seems to forget that Obito helped, making you wonder just HOW much of a role Itachi actually had in the massacre of the clan... just saying.
Then there was the fact that, if Itachi didn't kill the clan, they would have succeeded in their coup, making the 4th Great Ninja War occur(Because the Ninja War likes exploiting weak countries, see Village Hidden in the Rain.), and Sasuke would have been traumatized more by the horrors of war.
And, while I can't endorse the "Mind raping", as you put it, I think Itachi's actions off screen were better than those on screen. Like how he was the one who kept the Akatsuki from attacking Konaha... until he died... yeah.
And, actually, it was Obito that really pushed Sasuke into the abyss of madness... Obito's like Genesis, holy Sage... Then again, everyone calling Sasuke on surviving the Uchiha massacre also helped. And Orochimaru, let's not forget Orochimaru.
See, at first, Sasuke was happy with finishing the job Itachi left behind by killing him. Then Orochimaru twisted his desire, but his desire was still to kill Itachi. Then, he was happy with living in Konaha, but Orochimaru wouldn't have that, so he sent the Sound 4 to push Sasuke to him. Then after 2 years, Sasuke kills Orochimaru to get free of his influence(except he didn't. Die in snakey's case, and get free of his influence in hawk's case), and went off to kill Itachi. Itachi and Sasuke fight, and Sasuke wins, and then wants to go after Obito, who then twists Itachi's story to make Sasuke want revenge against Konaha. After he kills Danzo, he goes all Kira on us.
But then, he meets Itachi in the 4GNW(4th Great Ninja War), and he wants to know the truth from Itachi's lips. Then Kabuto shows up, and tries to twist both Itachi and Sasuke into fighting each other. The three fight, and Itachi's able to show Sasuke the truth, which only really highlights how heart broken Itachi was about having to kill his clan, and how he was crying severely when he had to kill his parents.
He didn't kill the clan because he was told there was no other choice. He killed the clan because Danzo manipulated the peace-loving Itachi into believing there WAS no other choice.
Itachi's past'll come into play later. I like to play cards like those slowly, and at the right time.
Thank you for your thoughts, however. I appreciate them.

Orochimaru did nothing. He literally didn't have to lift a finger after Itachi mindraped Sasuke again and essentially undid every ounce of character development Sasuke went through, and turned the Snake's taunt to Kakashi into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course Sasuke would desire power, after Itachi showed that he was a weakling that would never be strong enough to protect his friends from him.
Tobitodara simply took advantage of Itachi's constant manipulations.
Congratulations Sasuke, even after all these years you're still Itachi's little puppet dancing to his strings.
Personally, I think Itachi is a zealot. It also explains his "mindrape mindrape more mindrape" deal; he's a sociopath who literally does not know any better. Desensitized as he is to bloodshed and slaughter, I think Itachi simply does not know any better and is emotionally stunted.

...Are we just going to ignore Danzo? I mean, he's the one who played on Itachi's beliefs. And, after the massacre, Itachi was resigned to being killed by Sasuke. When he appeared after the Chunin Exams, he had no intention of fighting Sasuke. And, when he did, he had no idea what Sasuke was doing the past... 3 years? That sounds right.
And, it was after Itachi's visit that Kakashi sat Sasuke down for the 'Don't get swallowed by revenge' speech. And, Sasuke seemed to buy that.
But that all changed when the Sound 4 showed up, and confirmed how weak Sasuke was.(I could go into filler, the Land of Rice also playing into it, but I won't.)
On top of that, Itachi was simply playing the role of what Sasuke saw him as-a ruthless killer with no remorse. Like Tobitodara, he was very into his role, as seen when he refers to himself as Madara, knowing all the actions Madara took, and even keeping the guise of Tobi going when there's no Akatsuki members around. So...
I mean, sure, Itachi could have just killed the clan and left before Sasuke got there, but then Itachi wouldn't be able to try and uphold the image he's wanted Sasuke to see since the beginning.
That the Uchiha Clan was one the village should be proud of. By making Sasuke kill him, as an S-rank criminal, he wanted to make Sasuke a hero.
Danzo is Danzo. There's little more to be said. Itachi was mentally unstable enough that he went along with it. Hell, 99% of the series's villains could look at each other and justify themselves by saying "Well, at least I'm not Danzo."
Sasuke's was put into a coma by Itachi, and on waking up challenged Naruto. This is pretty much Itachi's fault; Kakashi may have given a pretty speech but the Sound Four pretty much continued where Itachi left off, and made things worse by proving the Worst Big Brother Ever correct.
This ties into "hate me, loathe me, live in an unsightly manner". Itachi may have wanted Konoha to see Sasuke as a hero, but his actions pretty much guaranteed Sasuke would snap. Itachi may have murdered the Clan, but Sasuke lived through it for 72 hours twice, with Itachi's Sith Lord speech thrown in for good measure.
The funny thing is that it looks like the genocide of the Uchiha has been justified. All the prominent Uchiha in the series have been mentally unstable; from Itachi's Knight Templar tendencies to Sasuke's Heel Face Revolving Door to Obito's massive overreaction syndrome.

Suppose your right. *shrug*.
