I get Windows 2000 installed.

Works fine now.

Go to Win98 to check if things still work.

They don't.

Windows protection error.

I know exactly what caused it, too. I swapped the Sound Blaster Pro 2 in the system for an AWE32 so that I could get sound in Win2k. I uninstalled the Pro 2 drivers in Win98, installed the AWE32 drivers, and rebooted.

And then the install did the dead.

When I was first building my first custom PC, I was working with some really tough screws, and... well, the screw bit slipped, and went into my finger beside the screw. Obviously, it's healed and fine now, but I typically use pliers for screws like that now.

Anyone got tips for a good PCI-based GPU for Socket 7 mobos? · 3:54am Jan 11th, 2018

'Cause seriously. At this point, 50% of the cards I own are GPUs that I found to be incompatible due to driver issues.

Namely, I suspect that the drivers use instructions that aren't found on Pentium/K6-era hardware.

GPUs that I've tried:

Nvidia Geforce Fx5200 PCI (BSOD upon loading anything utilizing hardware acceleration)

Welp. · 1:35am Dec 5th, 2017

Seems like my test bench PC doesn't like PCIe cards in the PCI slot using adapters. I'm guessing that it's due to the system already having an available PCIe slot and placing that on priority over the converted PCI slot that the GPU is currently slotted in.

Seems like Nvidia drivers don't like the k6. · 12:37am Aug 3rd, 2017

And by that, I mean that I get a BSOD whenever I try to run anything using DirectX 8 or higher, even though the card supports up to DX 9.0c.

I’ve got an ATI card I’ll try out soon, but it supports only up to DX 7/8 if I remember correctly, but should still be fine with OpenGL stuff.

Welp. There's always Windows 2000. Most of the software I'm trying to install is gonna work fine on Win2k anyways, with the exception of Google Chrome.

I've dropped out of so many minigames in Minecraft from my internet dying. Not to mention the fact that in BTD Battles if I get past round 50, chances are that my phone crashes and dies before I can ever pull off a win. :facehoof:

Don't get me started on how hot the thing gets when I'm playing Angry Birds.

Moderate troubles. · 6:57am Nov 3rd, 2018

I need a very specific update to IE 6 for Windows 2000 in order to get the kernel extension to work. I'm pretty sure I tracked down the correct file in the form of a multi-OS cumulative update ISO from microsoft's site.

I'll try burning it to disk and running it tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm installing DirectX 9 to benchmark the system with 3DMark 2001 SE.

Also, XingMPEG player, courtesy of winworldpc.com.

So yeah. Still not giving up on video playback.

I've confirmed that the 5.25" floppy drive I have is dead. · 7:13pm Nov 18th, 2018

The main issue seems to be that the motor is no longer strong enough to spin the disk, and as a result, the drive head cannot read any data beyond what is directly below it. I can get it to spin up if I press gently on it, but it results in a general failure being thrown in both FreeDOS and MS-DOS, so I have a feeling that there's more than just the drive motors having an issue.

My robotics competition starts tomorrow!

At least... part one of it. My high school's right on the borderline between two regionals, and so we're allowed to go to both the northwest and southwest regional competitions.

For now, the competition tomorrow is the southwestern one, and it lasts from morning to dusk starting tomorrow, and ending Saturday.

Ever see a VIA C7 processor paired up with a modern GPU using a PCI-to-PCIe adapter? · 3:48am Apr 4th, 2018

Can you say, "Ultimate Bottleneck"?

Still not as bad as Minecraft struggling to run on a downclocked-to-133MHz AMD K6 though. Haven't exactly tried stuffing a modern GPU into that system yet, but it's mainly because the CPU lacks so many instruction extensions that most drivers I've tried crash or BSOD the system. The few that did work are still buggy as heck.

K-Meleon for some reason isn't exactly working anymore in Windows 2000, especially with the Nvidia graphics drivers. I've only gotten it to work so far with only the Microsoft basic GDI driver.

What am I using instead?

Pale Moon!

EDIT: Nevermind, something's screwed with the Nvidia OpenGL driver. Palermo on and K-Melon both only render properly with GDI generic drivers

Yeah, it's been used so little that I'm stuck waiting for it to install updates between 2014 up to now. And some of the updates failed as well, so I'm now waiting for it to finish "undoing the changes".
