Due to some asshattery between Fimfiction and Imgur, it seems my title cards refuse to display. Until I figure out what's going on, I'm going to remove them from the story. Music links will remain and the story will still get written.
That's what my brain is like when I work without creative drive and play through the pain. Sometimes I can drown the pain of writing complete shit by making myself livid over the fact that I haven't worked on something in weeks.
Stayed up until 5AM to complete the draft. Got 900ish words into following chapter. Completed revisions 19 hours later.
Self-loathing never felt so good.
I'm not going to lie. I hate this chapter. I've rewritten it twice from the ground up, banged my head on my desk for missing stupid stuff, reworked the dialogue more times than I can count, walked away for a few days, and it's still not done. Again, I'm not going to make excuses because I've been trying to get out of the habit for a long time. But I am going to say that it will be a while before this chapter is presentable. Even then, it may undergo further rewrites as the story
So after some review, I've deleted two chapter outlines and... the main villain.
I know, I know. What story would be complete without a villain? The answer is: this one.
... comes another fight.
I know, no one asked for any of that boring, talky plot and character development, just bring on another firefight!
But seriously. I'm beating my head against my desk trying to get these chapters out. It's so incredibly frustrating having all the outlines done but none of the meat ready to string up on the bones. It's even more frustrating already having run these scenes in my head enough to get sick of them and still not having transcriptions of them down.
More build up and subplots, hopefully most of which I can resolve reasonably. The meat of chapter 10 is complete, but I am holding publishing until I work out a weird narrative issue. There is some transitional material insufficient for its own chapter that I have to decide to include at the end of this chapter or push into the beginning of the next chapter.
Internet has been in and out. So has money. Makes writing a bit rough. Have a snippet to make up for it.

Chapter 8 published without fanfare.
Some of you may also be aware that the chapter names have changed, as well as the numbering. This is because of a fundamental restructuring of the outlines I originally wrote for the second 2/3 of act II and all of act III. The story itself is not in jeopardy; the cuts I made in fact streamline the plot and make the meat of the story more substantial with far more opportunity for developing the core characters. Trust me, it'll be good.
At long last, the first part of Act II has arrived. It's been crazy IRL since I'm packing for a move and trying to plan a wedding, but somehow this came together. I cannot promise regular updates, but I can promise that it's being worked on as I go along.
Act II will dive into the meat of the main story and the real reason war has erupted in the north. I look forward to providing good reading in the future!
After some consideration, I have decided to change how I handle chapters. Though I like to create monolithic works as much as possible to maintain narrative consistency, I realize that this has the potential to adversely affect my readers. Most people don't want to sit down and read a 12k word chapter for a story that only updates every 3 months.
