A little thought exercise.

Mana:
Mana are Life-Energy.

It also known as Chi,Ki,Ether and/or Prana, they are the same thing with different name depending on the culture and/or language.

Mana are the primary fuel for magic, being something all living things inherently possessed.

Species-Base Magic:
A creature innate magic come from their Genetic-Code, the building-block of life.

When a creature use their magic, their mana flow through their genetic-code, interacting/reacting to the "spell-formula/code" within them and "casting" the effect.

Note:
Not all magic use mana. Non-living thing like ghost or other undead use different energy as their fuel.

A bit too simple? Probably. I'm trying to make it crossover friendly, not having to put to much work aligning it with other verse magic system.
