My first game, I spent in relative peace, though I did maintain several good sized fleets around my core systems, got a few allies, crappy allies, but still allies, well, until one of them pissed off an Empire RIGHT ON MY FREAKING BOARDER, I launched an invasion of their space to keep them from wiping out two of my pacifist allies with three fleets of 10k each, eh.

They pulled back 4 fleets of 11k each and attacked my homeworld the instant I left, rekt, eh.

They will utterly MOP anyone that pisses them off.
