I don't think gray could really represent sadness...

5111865 I always thought grey would end up as Peace, the balance between Life and Death the same way Will balances the other colors.

Most people seem to go with apathy/indifference/laziness. Here are some of the versions of the Oath that have been made.

So basically they would only get involved if they felt like it. If they tried to help out while not really feeling like it then they would lose power, so the only way they would gain power is by doing what they want regardless of what others think. So pretty much the ultimate anti-hero.

Well, Blue was canonically taken, so gray was the gloomiest color I could think of.
