Or perhaps, A. K. Yearling doesn't want to admit, even to herself, that Daring is real.

Perhaps, when A. K. Yearling was searching the mess of her house for the ring, she didn't really notice she was looking for it, and Daring was only having her do it unconsciously. Perhaps this is why Yearling doesn't write in the first person, because she truly believes, or is determined to believe, that she and Daring are not the same person.
