The Purge

Pre-Purge World

Late into the Post-Modern era the world began to expand its technology. Much of the frame work for today’s technical advances durrive from this time era, though that’s largely due to the rise of conflict there after. This time was spent fighting over resources and political viewpoints. That’s why some refer to it as the Glass era -as you were on one side or the other. Some called it the Gas War, but most simply refer to it as World War III. This is where our history begins.

Calling it a ‘war’ is a bit of a statement to make, as it covers several wars within it. There were the middle eastern wars -fought for oil-, there were the political wars -fought for ideologies-, and finally there was the class revolt that leads to the major power war that is famously remembered. Though they all happened at different times, they are grouped together because each fight never truly ended until the end of the Black Summer, when nuclear and archaic bombs fell and devastated much of the land.

We know that the Middle Eastern wars started back some time during the late 20th century, as there is still historical data to prove this. Fossil fuels were the primary source of power, and that region held the largest reserves. Many different nations fought for control and influence in the region, driving many of the larger world powers apart. This would lead to the ideological wars. When the advent of magic started to become a viable power source, the people of this region started to fight against this. As the threat against their income started to become real, so did the threat against this new age power. It is believed that a European nation discovered Magic, but it was refined in the North Americas. With tensions already thick because of the growing distrust between the two regions, the world would split itself into two major powers. We refer to these powers as the Magii, and the Remnants.

The Magii are the groups of people who pushed for the advancement of Magic. We know that the North Americas, many European nations, and many Pacific Island nations were aligned with this ideology. Much of the rest of the major world powers sided with the Remnant movement, named for it’s stubborn belief that Magic would doom the world. There was a third party to this equation as well, those that were developing behind the major powers. Many of these small nations had natural reserves needed for each side to continue and grow, so their influence would play a role in the wars to come. There are those that argue that fighting in these small nations lead to the major powers fighting, much like the alignments of the early 20th century war did. Two factions would fight for control of a region, backed by either side. The fighting would grow until finally one major power would directly affect the other major power, leading to direct fighting.

The beginning of World War III, or the Final War started sometime in the early to mid 21st century. This is where history starts to become hazy, as it started with a cyberwar. The lesser powers wanted to erase Magic from the world. They started by targeting magical power plants, trying to remove power grids and forcing them to revert to old powers. In their attempts to do this, the Magii targeted them back in a similar fashion; targeting power stations of the Remnant. When the power couldn’t be stopped, they moved to targeting data drives. If they couldn’t stop them from using magical powers, they would try to remove magic from history. The virus that was created to perform this task sadly started removing all data from the internet. It is estimated that less than one percent of the information that was on the internet survived this attack. This was the final act that would lead to each nation invading each other directly.

It was feared that any fight would lead to nuclear war, but that was not the case. Our estimates suggest that the war was fought for at least ten years, as each side refused to be subjugated to the other. It is unclear who fired the first weapons of mass destruction, or why. It is even more unclear as to how the Remnants obtained super archaic weapons. All that is known is that the effects from the weapons would darken the sky for an estimated ten to fifteen years, referred to as the Black Summer.

The reason people migrated to the North Americas is because much of the fighting was done elsewhere in the world. The front lines were rarely here and when the bombs did fall the countries here were better prepared. The Oil wars left the Middle East and the South Americas torn apart, the Glass wars left much of the European and South Asian countries with little to no infrastructure, and the Final War left much of the remaining world powers a nuclear and archaic wastelands. There simply wasn’t anywhere else for them to go.

There isn’t much left from the Blac Summer for us to study. Whatever Infrastructure that was left was eventually scrapped for the upcoming nations, and much of the documentation was destroyed -either from the bombs themselves or the Cyber War (a part of the Glass War).

There is much to be speculated from this time, as there is little artifacts to go off of. We cannot go to the relic sites of these places, as we are safe underground. We simply take the remaining knowledge that’s been passed down, and speculate from that. It is our hope that one day we will emerge from our hiding and find our history!

Purgian Progress

The Black Summer achieved one thing for humanity: it solidified magic as a daily occurrence. With the sky blocked out, food had to be made. And since it couldn’t be grown and the resources of the old world were gone, magic was the only choice. With many of the old world technologies still intact in the North Americas, they were able to make new magic based copies, often using the older ones for parts. In a stroke of luck, many of the surviving buildings were of the scientific nature, giving a head start to those there to rebuild. But, with many people migrating from different parts of the world, conflict would be on the rise.

In the early days of the new world, there were basically three groups of people. There were those that were naturally born to the area living in scientific communities, immigrants from previously allied nations, and immigrants from enemy nations. There were smaller groups of people as well, but their role in Terradisian history is too obscure to be categorized. Each of the main three factions would play their part in forming the Terradisian Empire and the Spartan Regiment.

The main issue from these times is that none of these factions made detailed accounts of their daily affairs. We know that the indigenous people focused on astrological pursuits, while the allied immigrants focused on more agrarian pursuits -often feeding both their people and the indigenous people in exchange for advanced weapons. And, from what little accounts that have been made, we speculate that the second group of immigrants acted as a terrorist group against the others. It would seem that they had to integrate into the other society in order to survive, but held onto their grudges. That, or they were allowed into their ranks, but were treated as second class citizens, or worse.

It was during this time that much of the common achievements were framed. Space would become a viable frontier and artificial intelligence made new strides. And with magic at their side, breakthroughs were happening faster than the expansion of the internet. But with all of these new technologies happening on a daily bases, they were bound to end up in the wrong hands.

Those that identified as members of the Remnant would form a cou and attempt to upset the status quo. This would start the Purgian Civil War. Those of the scientific community were fewer in number, but held far superior weapons. Those of the Remnants had higher numbers and often used guerilla tactics (fighting in populated areas, taking key figures hostage, IED’s, ect). But, it did not become a civil war between the indigenous people and the Remnants. Rather, it became a war between all of the individual communities of indigenous people.

Each community had their own beliefs on how to deal with these threats. Some sought new scientific experiments on those that fought, while others looked for ways to deter people from wanting to fight. An estimated ten groups formed their own civilization and would wage war against each other for years to come, though many of the indigenous people did little of the actual fighting. Ancestors from the allied immigrants took refuge with these groups of people in exchange for technological advances. Those that were not part of a specific group were preyed upon by the very same groups. Outsiders were experimented on, enslaved, or banished out of a specific region, only to enter another nation's realm of influence. It didn’t take long for the entire human population to be subjugated by one of these nations. Once they were, a stalemate grew between each of the nations.

With the advancements in technology and magic, any battle that could be waged would devastate the area to the point where it would lose it’s value. With much of the world still uninhabitable, it was unanimously agreed that certain weapons couldn’t be used. With that in mind, the actual fighting stopped. The losses from taking another nation would leave them too vulnerable for attack. It was mutually agreed destruction all over again. It is unknown how long the Purgian Cold War lasted, but we know that at the beginning of it aircraft could break the sound barrier, and by the end spacecraft could make jumps to the Andromina system. What ended this war was the legend of the Spartan Regiment.

As the legend goes, a man was exiled from one of the cities and sent into the southern wastelands. From there, he would somehow travel the entire world and come back changed, both mentally and physically. He wrote his own personal accord, but much of what he put there has been disputed. He claims that he traveled from the South Americas to the European nations, then from what was Russia to the Heart of the Earth, and finally from south east asia to Australia. In the amount of time that he claims he spent traveling, he achieved all of this in two years, simply impossible for multiple obvious reasons.

The legend goes on to say that this man, Son of his Sword (as he called himself), would make the trip back to the nine of the ten nations and meet individuals from each of them. He would speak with them and convince them to leave their lives and follow him on his quest to unite the people. Teaching his followers in his personal ways of magic, they took his home city and formed a new government, Terradisia. With the city under their control, they would wage wars against each of the other nations, forcing them under their rule.

The legend ends with the sacking of the final city. The Ten used their powerful magic to tear the city apart. When they did, the ground opened up to reveal massive chasms of emeralds. The Son of the Sword would die there that day. The legend tells us that after completing his lifelong goal and uniting humanity, his magic turned on him and turned him to ash. Most speculate that he sustained injuries during the final battle. Either way, his followers would unite and raise a new nation, with the Emerald City as its capital.

There were problems in the beginning of this new nation though. Many people lost loved ones from the onslaught of the Ten and wanted some form of justice against them. At the same time, a system of government was being built, but no one could agree on what kind of government should be made. Many of these people were still ancestors of the Remnants, so a unified opinion couldn’t be met. Likewise, the Ten refused to be criminalized for their actions, as they believed it would benefit humanity in the long run. Years of debating would occur before The Great Compromise would occur.

The Great Compromise was the supposed son of the Son of the Sword and the political leaders of the Emerald City. The government would be split into two houses, executive and legislative. The executive branch would be lead by a king and his ancestors. If his bloodline would end, the legislative branch would appoint a new family to the throne. The legislative branch would be made up of two houses. The Lord’s (people of high ranking within society, typically of the upper two percent) and the Senate (appointed officials that studied law. A rule was made that they could not be a part of the Lord’s). These two houses would create laws and regulations that the people would vote on. Lawyers and judges were put under strict regulations and were put in the public eye, to stop corruption. As it is today, if you study the law, you’re life is known to the public. Income, tax information, even topics of the personal effect were forced into public view.

As for the Ten, there was only one way to save them. They were forced into their own segment of society. They were a part of Terradisia, but separate as well. They would form a military regime that would act as its own government, within Terradisian government. Thus, the Spartan Regiment was born. They were separate from the Terradisians, yet bound by most of their laws. In exchange, the Spartans would safeguard the people and subjugate themselves to the life of a soldier. Most that would become Spartans back in these times would leave their homes and travel the universe, plocing the people and fighting to tame new colonies in other worlds. Whenever a new inhabitable planet was found, the Spartans were the first to go. If there was injustice within the Empire, the Spartans would view it and take whatever necessary actions required to right the wrongs. Humanity had finally united.

The Unfamiliar/ Burial

After the formation of the Spartan Regiment and the unification of humanity under one banner, humanity entered its golden age. Technology advanced, the final frontier was being charted, and the people were safe. Ten colonies were formed in four different systems. The empire grew to a population of nearly five billion people. It is believed that many of the outer reach colonies had technologies far greater than anything here today, as they would need them to start a new colony on uninhabited planets. Whatever secrets they uncovered, whatever wonders they found, were lost after first contact.

Our first communication attempts with intelligent life were met with violence. Sadly for them, they lacked weapon systems that could rival our own. After that first battle, the escape pods they jettisoned from the burning wreckage were allowed to escape, several of which were even tracked. Communication attempts were made several more times, but all ended the same. No matter what, we could never get face to face with them without being met with violence. There are several speculations as to why, but they will never be confirmed. As part of their codex, the Spartans rose to meet this challenge.

The first human assault against the Unfamiliar was on March 23, 27 C.C. Its target was a military outpost in the outer reach, what was believed to be the edge of Unfamiliar territory. With its capture, we gained the information necessary to make a full scale invasion of the Unfamiliar nation. With the ease of victory, speculation was that victory would be had within a year. But, those were naive assumptions.

The first counter attack made by the Unfamiliar caught the third fleet completely by surprise. Even with our superior technology they were simply out number. Of the two battle carriers, four frigates, and two destroyers in the fight, only one frigate made it back from the battle. Data from the vessel gave us the assumption that the Unfamiliar territory was much more vast than previously believed. To support the number of vessels in the battle, they needed resources of at least thirty habitable worlds. This is also based on the trajectory of many of their vessels as they entered combat.

The war would continue on for nearly a century, though it wasn’t constant battle. There were periods of simply not knowing where the enemy was. Many of the planets that were discovered in the early operations were either eradicated or found completely abandoned. It wasn’t until 107 C.C. that the war would take a turn for the worse.

Novam Spem, Aureus Radius, and Gladiis Anima fell. It is unclear how these three planets fell, as there were no distress signals made. No energy readings to suggest any major battles, none of the safety alarms activated to warn the other planets, and there were no vessels trying to escape. A new method or technology was developed by the Unfamiliar, and it wiped three colonies out in a matter of minutes. A month later, another colony would fall. In a final act of desperation, a radical idea was proposed. A group of Spartans carried out a suicide mission that would kill their home world, by launching an Alpha Super Archaic Missile.

The hope was to intimidate them to the point where they would lose the will to fight, or at least lose some of their momentum. Neither was achieved. When the next planet was overrun by the Unfamiliar, a decision was made. Humanity would hide its gem from the oncoming threat. All Terran cities were to be buried beneath the crust in an attempt to hide from the approaching horde. Similar orders were given to the remaining colonies, but they refused with a simple message, one we all endure to this day.

Hodie, cras, per ómnia sǽcula. Pugnare.

Sorry for the delay on this. I actually wrote this out three times. The first time was oddly too specific and the second time made me feel as if I wasn't giving enough. But, it's finally here! This is the Purge, as the Terradisians know it. This is the most that will be revealed of this part of history via Man of War. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into the lore.

Awesome! I have been looking forward to this s for a long time! One thing,

Those of the Remnants had higher numbers and often used gorilla tactics (fighting in populated areas, taking key figures hostage, IED’s, ect).

Gorilla should be guerilla. They're very different things.
