So the thought behind this isn't wether the mane 6 are the power ponies but what if they along with a few other ponies are mere citizens of Maretropolis.

Obviously these variations would have no knowledge of what their counterparts are/did in the show universe. Think of it this way, there just so happens to be a lavender unicorn by the name of Twilight Sparkle that is the proud librarian of the most esteemed library in Maretropolis. Or a candy salespony that just so happens to be named Pinkie Pie. Perhaps there is a secret society of vamponies in the city lead by a shy yellow mare.

This is just a thought I had and I was curious to see what everyone thought of it. Would that be too weird (especially with the characters for the most part being side characters) or do you find it interesting?

The way alternate universes in MLP work, it's all but guaranteed so long as the "fictional" Maretropolis is a "real" reality.

7212448 I'm... not sure. Personally I'm kind of rolling it that the characters from the comics are the power ponies and the mane 6 (as well as some of the other characters) are just normal citizens in Maretropolis (well, normalish).

So I came back after giving it some more thought and I've come to a few ideas about alternative occupations for the main six (since I think that's what you are asking about).

Twilight would be a scientist. She would either, a. own a small research and development firm b. be a researcher for a larger firm, or c be a assistant as part of a mentorship deal.

Fluttershy would either be a guide or a zoologist. She'd could either be studying animals, taking care of them at a zoo or animal sanctuary.

Or she could be escorting ponies through wilderness zones, and authorized individuals through nature habitats.

Rainbow Dash could either be a stunt pony or a member of Equestria's military.

Rarity would either be involved at a jewelry, a seamstress, gossip reporter, or a scout for a modeling agency.

Pinkie Pie would either be part of a catering company, or running a party store.

And Applejack would probably be a partying socialite, if she didn't go back to the farm.
