Native to the islands of Orkneyjar (near Glascolt), Finfolk are amphibious equines related to Kelpies, and indeed in their youth look similar to their relatives. However, upon reaching 15 years of age, their manes and the hair on their tails begins falling out, and their coats become more akin to seal fur. Their gills and fins become more prominent, until it becomes clear that they are a different species. Stallions are grey with red fins, while the females are brown with green fins.

They are a race of dark and gloomy equines, feared and mistrusted by the ponies who call Orkneyjar home. In addition to possessing sea and storm magic, stories say they have a penchant for abducting land equines. They would spirit away their captives, transporting them to their hidden island homes, where they generally forced to remain for the rest of their days. These unfortunates were usually taken to become the wife or husband of one of the Finfolk.

The Finfolk lead a nomadic lifestyle. They spend the long winters of their home in the luxury of Finfolkaheem, a majestic city of unknown location at the bottom of the sea. For countless generations, Orcadian storytellers have waxed lyrical about this fantastic undersea kingdom, describing with great zeal its massive crystal halls and ornate gardens of multi-colored seaweed. Lit by the phosphorescent glow of the sea, Finfolkaheem is decorated with swathes of draped curtains whose colors shifted like the ever-changing shades of the the Aurora Borealis. Towers of glistening white coral spiral upwards, encrusted with pearls and precious gemstones. The kingdom is said to be so rich that giant pearls are littered everywhere, often ground up by the finfolk to provide the powder that was scattered over their coats to give them their sparkling sheen.

In the summer, however, they returned to Orkneyjar, where they take up residence on their magical island home, Hildaland - one of Orkneyjar's magical vanishing islands. Through the magic of the Finfolk, Hildaland is kept hidden from outsiders, surrounded by a magical bank of fog. Past this, the island itself is said to be a beautiful green land of glistening streams and fertile fields.
