the Sea Ponies are an enigmatic race most likely descended from coastal Pony tribes that lived during the last ice age. evolution, natural and magical, has allowed them to adapt to their watery home. Sea ponies are omnivores, eating fish as well as seaweed and aquatic plants.

HIPPOCAMPS
the hippocampi are typical sea ponies, with normal forelegs and an aquatic tail

Sea ponies (Merponies, Hippocampi) differ little from their land dwelling cousins beyond physical appearance. they come in normal and unicorn varieties, both of which sometimes have "wing fins".

Sea Ponies are industrious workers, having developed the mechanical legs they use to walk around on land. sea ponies tend to be on good terms with Ophiotauri, Makara, and Merrow, but are wary of the war-like capricorns.

Styxian
A Royal Guard of the Black Fleet of the Black Isles

Styxians (Night Sea Ponies, Abyssals) are an offshoot of sea ponies who have developed horns and nocturnal habits. they are faster and more magically adept than normal sea ponies, and are usually better fighters.

Orca Pony

Native to northern waters, Orca Ponies are shy beings that congregate in matriarchal pods

Rusalka
Princess Aurora

rusalka (Freshwater sea ponies) are a breed of Hippocamp that live in rivers and lakes. they are distinguished by their separate "fingers".

They are also known for their promiscuousness, and many a stallion or mare has woken up in bed to find a rusalka next to them... often in the position they were in the night before.

Hipposelachi

Open-ocean omnivores, these seaponies are rarely encountered

Carcharo

Close relatives of the Hipposelachi, these equines are the equivalent of underwater pirates, swimming around in gangs and possessing crude spears made out of bone or, in some rare instances, metal salvaged from shipwrecks.

Dasyatis

mysterious, the Dasyatis are mistrusted by other seapony races due to their appearance, isolationist natures, and tendency to willingly dabble in dark magic.

despite this, the Dasyatis as a whole are not evil, simply preferring to be left alone in their sea canyon cities.

They live on a diet of shellfish and sea plants, but have both a venomous stinger and the ability to produce an electric shock.

Chéli

the chéli are a race of eel-like sea pony in which the females are larger and more aggressive, as well as more drab-colored.

Squiz

a... unique species of sea pony, squiz are perpetually optimistic, but tend to be clumsy, and a bit ditzy at times

When startled (or bored), Squizes will emit a bioluminescent cloud like that of a Vampire Squid.

PISCINE SEA PONIES

these equines are more fish-like, and can breath underwater through gills on their torso.

Reef Dweller

Reef Dwellers, or shallow water sea ponies, have prehensile tails to grasp onto objects, though their stubby fins can awkwardly hold things.

they are musical, and will sing at any given opportunity

Trench Dweller

little is known about these mysterious equines, save for that the males are the only ones with a glowing lure, which functions like a unicorn horn.

Lorelei

The Lorelei (or "Mermares", though stallions exist) are the fastest of the piscine sea ponies, but are also somewhat introverted. they travel in large groups called "pods", and are notoriously difficult to find.

Argatis

Found roaming the Grey, Great Pelagic, and Northern Oceans, the Argati, or "Celestial Mermares" are sometimes found swimming up into deeper harbors, rivers, and lakes with connections to the sea. While some are nomadic, the larger groups of them prefer to establish settlements on reefs near deep water. Having an elongated body, mermares swim with two flippers, a tail fin, and a long dorsal fin on their backs. Their magic, like those of other seaponies, is primarily based off influence. Their songs can project magic influence the emotions of other beings who listen to them. They also have the unique ability to give ‘luck’, good or bad, to an area or person.

The average Argatis can live almost as long as an alicorn

Western Argati tend to be highly nomadic, living in groups (called pods) of up to around fifteen lead by a matriarch. These equines are also very hostile and skittish of terrestrial species, an influence of the group frequently having had bad run-ins with pirates after their charm items in the past. This group has been known to cause trouble for groups moving into or through their territories. Near constantly mobile, these groups hop around from settlement to settlement every couple of days and often move through vast stretches of sea to do so. Settlement locations are often reefs, underwater caves, blue holes, and deep water crevices.

Eastern and northern Argati on the other hoof, are more localized. While distrustful and often keeping their distance from terrestrials while being very secretive, they aren’t as hostile. Less nomadic, Eastern and Northern pods then to cluster in permanent dwellings in the form of hard to access islands, sea caves, and deep water plains to form villages and even towns.

Several large pods in the Celestial Sea are so well established in their locale that they formed a ‘Queendom’ several centuries after Equestria was established, and it persists to this day. Most eastern and northern Argati belong to this ‘nationality’, even if they don’t live in the capital citadel. The place the queendom is centered on is an uncharted island called "Mako", which is inaccessible due to dangerous reefs, strong surface currents that push boats away, and a ring of near constant storms pegasi can't break.

The founder of this queendom was Queen Amatheia, who discovered Mako island and unified of the Eastern, Southern, and Norther pods.

After her death, the queendom passed to her eldest daughter Melpomene (left), while her younger daughter Hymnia (right) acted as royal adviser.

However, when these two retired, the duty of ruling was given to a mare named Maui, a distant relative, gaining the title after being chosen thanks to her gifted magical ability and leadership skills rather than blood relation. Unlike most of her predecessors, Maui has been pushing hard for Mako to have more casual relations with Equestria proper and find a way for outsiders to safely travel through The Shroud (the storm system surrounding Mako island). Around others, Maui is polite even if her mind works at a mile a minute. Queen Maui's ideal is to create a guard-able hole in The Shroud, rather than outright dismantle it, as the Shroud still is an important part of Mako and the ocean is a dangerous place. Due to duties as a royal, Maui hasn't had "shore leave" in years and it's been driving her bat-fishy. She also hasn't had that kind of shore leave in a long time.

Bukapi

the bukapi ("true rulers" in their tongue) are foal-sized, brightly colored equines who tend to have inflated egos, ranging from "i'm better than you" to "i'm going to take over the world!"

Like parrotfish and hagfish, bukapi can produce large amounts of slime. however, they can magically control it and manipulate it, often making "slime constructs" to travel on land

Hippoglobus

Shy yet carefree members of the seapony family, Hippoglobi are similar to the pufferfish in that they can inflate themselves when they feel threatened (or just want to).

Hippoglobi are nomadic, but tend to stick to shallow reefs, being uncomfortable in the open ocean unless there's a large seaweed mat nearby.

OCTOPONIES

Octoponies have eight tentacles rather than either back legs or a tail, and have somewhat collapsible/"bendy" skeletons, allowing them to fit through any space they can fit their head through. Octoponies are more fond of shellfish than actual fish, and can change color to better sneak up on them. when in danger, they spray a cloud of ink.

Cecaelia

Cecaelia tend to be a highly curious race inquisitive of anything they come across. They are however wary of strangers, and are quickly flustered by any attempts at diplomacy which they almost always view as attempts to deceive them due to a somewhat paranoid nature. Those who do manage to form an alliance with them though will have a useful ally as their inquisitive nature makes them adept at hunting for sunken treasures anywhere near their domain.

Cilophyte

More aggressive than their cecaelia cousins, the cilophytes are even MORE paranoid than the easygoing octoponies.

They are also more predatory.

RONESEQUUS

a bizarre and massive species of seapony, rivaling a killer whale in size, ronesequi spend most of their time sleeping near the ocean floor

Allow me to contribute, based on the two species that appear in my first book.
both are located off the coast of the Minotaur lands

Atlantian: similar in appearance to Hippocampi, Atlantians differ in the fact that they still retain their rear legs in addition to possessing the dolphin-like tail of Hippocampi, they also have small claws to allow them to grasp objects (such as spears) or grip onto the rocky terrain of the local seabed. they live in a large, underwater city that is protected in a set of domes:

there are also nearby settlements located on outcroppings that are made up of many, much smaller and sparsely spread out domes:

Carcharo: these sea ponies are actually a sub-species of Capall Uisce. Rather than dwell in cities like the Atlantians, Carcharos are entirely aquatic, they are lacking their rear legs and their front legs now posses a set of webbed claws. they are the equivalent of underwater pirates, swimming around in gangs and possessing crude spears made out of bone or, in some rare instances, metal salvaged from shipwrecks. As their name suggests, Carcharos (derived from the latin: Carcharodon, meaning shark tooth) bear a great resemblance to actual sharks, with a snout resembling that of some deep sea sharks

p.s. the shark I linked to is a real shark, called the aptly named 'Goblin shark'

3584658 I'm well aware of the goblin or "tengu" shark. and while the suggestions are good, I don't think i'll add them. For one, the ruins of Shetlantis are not located near Minos (wrong ocean), and I just don't want to overpopulate with equines
