My thoughts on Velma being officially lesbian · 4:52pm Oct 7th, 2022

I...…have mixed feelings about this.

First off, I'm actually happy that the creators are including some LGBT representation for the Scooby-Doo franchise, but on the other hand....it feels a bit rushed and unearned in Velma's case.

I'm saying this because she had a lot of boyfriends in previous iterations (both live-action and animated), and now she's gay all of a sudden? It doesn't make sense to me.

Now, I am fully aware that James Gunn actually tried to make her gay for the longest time since the live-action movies but failed to; with that in mind, shouldn't Gunn tried to include some other character in the franchise and make him/her/them LGBT instead? Because now you're taking a popular character from Scooby-Doo who was never established as lesbian despite multiple attempts to make her as such in canon and now finally include her as lesbian. It now feels like they are actively ignoring her past hetero relationships in other media and pretend that she has always been gay. It now comes off as forced representation instead of natural. If James instead made her as bisexual, then it would make a lot more sense. It wouldn't blatantly ignore her past relationships and still faithfully incorporate something new in Velma's character such as being attracted to women. That would have been great.

But these are my two cents on the subject. What do you guys think?

My religion frowns upon that stuff... But I personally believe that you shouldn't ridicule or anything bad on someone because of their beliefs. You never know when that'll come back to haunt you.

We need more people like you, Wrex. Thank you for being understanding and respectful.

But it’s not just beliefs, it’s also one’s sexuality and lifestyle that’s involved. Still, you’re right.

No problem, buddy.

Yay. I wasn’t pleased about that in the slightest.

Every reason as to why is also exactly what you stated. It would’ve been fine if it was with an original character, but Velma…not so much. It basically ignores the fact that she fell in love for and dated men in past Scooby-Doo installments, and it openly feels like a desperate attempt by Warner Bros. to simply earn more cash and give their new movie larger notice.

There was another case told by...Cerivone I think. Was about Velma in Mystery Incorporated; similar issue of the staff working the show had plans for her to be a lesbian but execs 86'd it.

Is it just the sudden switch of sexuality that rubs you the wrong way without establishment?

I just remembered something regarding Velma as of late.

While I haven’t seen too many of the latest Scooby-Doo installments, one thing I can’t help but feel particularly annoyed by is that Velma seems to have become a know-it-all Mary Sue. In this case, she seems to always be right about everything even when her deductions and conclusions aren’t logical.
