Greetings, everybody. This is Mr. J back with another movie review for today. This afternoon, I will be reviewing a 2007 American comedy film entitled: Evan Almighty, a spin-off of Bruce Almighty from 2003. I remember watching this movie back in that same year but once it was released on DVD; my parents and I watched it together in our living room at that time. I can't remember if I liked it or not, but it was something that stuck with me for a long time. That was why I decided to re-visit it a few months ago to see if it still holds up today. Unfortunately, it does not....at least not entirely. I don't think it is a bad movie per say, but it isn't that great either.

This film is about a family man named Evan Baxter who is seeking a career in the government when suddenly, a man magically appears to him and tells him to build him an ark--re-enacting the famous story of Noah's Ark from Genesis in the Bible. Having literally no choice (despite numerous attempts to reject the calling), he grows a beard, ages to an old man looking like Noah, builds an ark, and tells his family to help gather the animals before a local flood shows up.

First of all, the plot makes no sense whatsoever. What reason did God call upon some random congressman to become a new Noah and to bring about a local flood? Why is God trying to re-enact the same exact event in a modern time and age? Were the people in the town growing wicked? Was there mass murder, crime, or sex trafficking happening in the city? The plot makes no sense at all. And why was He stalking Evan endlessly just to get him do His work for Him? I get that this is a comedy movie and all, but the way they executed this plot-line hardly made sense that it came across as unfunny and forced.

Still, I will say that the acting was flawless and outstanding. I enjoyed Steve Carell's exceptional acting, Morgan Freeman being himself, and especially seeing Wanda Sykes having so much fun in her supporting role. As for John Goodman, I liked his performance, but his character was rather lackluster and generic. He hardly stood out as a compelling antagonist and more like someone with little character. That's just me.

Plus, there were a lot of moments in the movie that were genuinely funny; some scenes had to do with Evan trying to shave his beard or whenever he found himself naked or wearing preacher's clothes. It was also hilarious that all the animals instantly flocked to him like he's Fluttershy, no matter how often he tried to get away from them. That's when the film actually succeeded in being humorous whereas the rest felt so cringe-worthy.

From what I got out of this movie, Christianity should be forced upon those who don't believe in it. That's what the climax and the ending seemed like to me; if you don't believe in Christianity or in God, a flood will come by and kill you all. It's no wonder why there are so many religious extremists and fanatics out there who will browbeat you to accept their beliefs. Having known these type of people all my life, it is harmful and despicable. No disrespect to any of you who are religious, but you must always remember to respect those who may not be religious or may not agree with your beliefs. That's all.

With that said, I will rate this a 5/10. It is a mediocre comedy movie that may not be horrible but still goes out of its way to portray Christianity in a way that it shouldn't be.

Peace.

Yay. I may have seen this movie once or twice, but it never stood out to me as something exceptional.

Also, I never saw "Evan Almighty", but I never bothered because it carried a similar horrible portrayal of Christianity, particularly because of Jim Carrey's character "getting God's powers".

Don't you mean "Bruce Almighty" in the second paragraph?

Speaking of “Evan Almighty”…

Do you plan on reviewing that movie at some point?

I've honestly never seen that film, but considering that this film is a spin-off of "Bruce Almighty", I won't be watching it.

I meant “Bruce Almighty”.

Man, I’ve got “Evan Almighty” stuck in my head so much that I keep typing it instead of “Bruce Almighty.

What’s the matter with me?

Heh... another movie I remember seeing on... I think it was on Cartoon Network or some other channel... from time to time. ^^

I tell ya.... the whole climax scene when riding out the flood? That's like being on a thrill ride though :D :yay:
