I cannot be the only one who realizes just how heteronormative the mlp fandom was when it came to shipping, especially during the early years of the show; it’s changed a lot more recently of course but goddamn was it overtly straight 😭😭
Like I’m sorry applejack x caramel is the straightest thing I’ve ever seen why was that a big ship in the first place??
At least rarity x fancy pants made sense since they had quite a few positive and even cute interactions so I’m fully behind it but I will never understand why applejack x caramel became so popular I swear to god it’s because it was straight that’s the only explanation I have

To the point where they resolve to Rule 63 stuff (Like the Sonata Dusk x Dusk Shine ship, where they use Twilight’s Rule 63 counterpart instead of Twilight herself but they keep Sonata as a female. Or that one trend where Twilight is a stallion and the rest of the mane 6 is his harem of mares)
I’ve never been a fan of half-rule 63 stuff, especially if it’s used solely to turn a gay pairing straight or a straight pairing gay.

Also, I dont think i entirely agree with this blog...
1. The only reason people have to "reach" for straight ships is because the majority of primary characters are female... (I am NOT here to discuss gender politics.)
2. The majority of people are straight... sorry... personal bias is a thing and it's not bad per-sei.
4. People often shipped characters they liked over any personality compatibility.
5. People often ship odd couples because they are something they hadn't seen instead of the same ships over and over.
Also... the STORIES may have been, but obviously you haven't looked... deeper...
Honestly shipping is stupid anyway IMO.

Like, having two friends become lovers is one thing, but having something like... vinyl scratch and rarity (just an example) doesn't make much sense unless you MAKE it make sense in your story, and that is kinda hard to do.

To which my answer would be:
1. In real life same sex relationships can't produce adorable children.

personally i think it made sense for the time, homophobia was sort of still the norm at the time (I think people started being more accepting towards the mid or late 2010s from my memory) so it's kind of not surprising it was like this. so i'm about half-serious here but man was it a strange time in retrospect, and shipping wars were at it's worst. oh and to be completely fair i would not be surprised if a magical place like the mlp world was capable of magically creating a way for a child to happen between two members of the same-sex, which you would think most bronies at the time would've thought of lmao
