So while I was at work, I had to do some brain dead job and I daydreamed to pass the time. Whilst doing so I came up with a new theory on how magic can be explained in Equestria. Just FYI, some of the info here is not entirely true with what we know, such as electrons being the negative force not neutrons, but again this is for the world of Equestria not ours. It seemed like it can make some sense to the magical world that is Equestria. If you wish to use this knowledge to explain magic in your stories go right ahead!
The Theory on Magic and Atoms:
There are three known magical elements: Light Magic, Dark magic and Chaos Magic. And each one is different and unique from one another. Light magic can do tasks that are powered by positive emotions, such as levitation and temperature magic. Dark magic can do tasks that are powered by negative emotions, such as shadow form and mind magic. And finally we have chaos magic, which is powered by the Unstable emotions (at least to our best knowledge since the only form of chaos magic left in the world is used by Discord), and can use magic that can warp reality, up to and including the ability to changing the very base elements that make up an object or being (as far as we know).
But there is no known way of explaining how this works scientifically. But what if I told you there is.
In order to explain this we must delve deep into the very fabrics of what makes the world, and everything in it, exist. The very things that determine what they are, what they are made out of and how they define everything that makes them exist in the first place.
Atoms, the very structure that builds up everything in the world and exists everywhere on this planet. They build us up from the very bottom and all the way up to the sky. These are what define everything we are and what we will be. They are what make the very elements we know of, determining if an object is made of iron or gold. These are the very structures that build up the entire world, no, the entire universe. And they also are what define magic.
To explain this, we need to know what an atom is exactly. An atom is the basic unit of a chemical element, like iron or sulfur. Every atom is built up by three basic components. These components are: Proton, Neutron, and Electron. Both the proton and neutron are full of energy, positive (the proton) and negative (the neutron). And as we know, opposites attract. And since they are attracted, they form up clusters, making the inside of the atom. How many protons and neutrons in an atom is what defines the atom's core element. Of course if electrons didn't exist, then all protons and neutrons would then connect with each other, forming one giant unknown element, leaving nothing but a giant mass in the universe. The electron is made of a stable electrical power that prevents other protons and neutrons from forming with other protons and neutrons. This is what makes up the entire world and the known elements within it.
Magic is defined by emotions, positive, negative and chaotic (possibly). And we believe this correlates to the very particles that make this world as well. Protons and light magic are both charged by positive energy, while neutrons and dark magic are charged by negative energy. But Chaos magic is a bit different, being able to move electrons and changing the very fiber of the atoms forcing them to change their very core element.
Light Magic is charged when a being uses positive emotions and feelings to power up their magic, allowing them to perform certain tasks. Doing so charges the very protons in the air causing them to move to the will of the user. This is especially so when using levitation magic. This moves one object to another. By charging up the power of the protons one can take hold of the protons in said object and move them by moving their positive emotions in the direction they wish for the object to go. This is one of the many examples of how protons and light magic are connected. But further research is required to discover why certain beings are able to connect with their emotions to the very atoms that are linked by said emotions.
Dark magic is charged when a being uses negative emotions and feelings to power up their magic, allowing them to perform tasks that differ from light magic. Negative emotions charge up the neutrons in atoms just like light magic does with protons. Except, instead of being able to move objects from one place to another, they have the opposite effect. They pull the neutrons apart from the protons, creating an partially unstable atom that is broken up and acts like a gas, allowing solid objects to pass through them with ease without changing its core element. To better explain this we will look at the spell known as Shadow Form. This spell allows the user to become a literal shadow, or more like a cloud that can have objects pass through it. This is similar to evaporation. Just like how water can be turned into a gas, one can do so with the Shadow Form spell. It is essentially just changing the state of matter the object is in, being either a solid, a liquid, or a gas, not the very element itself. Water is still water if it has been turned into a gas, just like how shadow form is still just a pony, but in gas form. This also allows the user to change an object's shape, similar to how King Sombra, the once tyrannical ruler of the Crystal Empire, could use dark magic to make weapons out of pure crystal. Even so, further research is required for certain spells that need explaining and a better understanding on how it influences the mind.
Finally we have chaos magic, where the scientific community and magic community have scratched their heads over for centuries due to no one knowing how to use it other than Discord, the god of chaos. I theorize that chaos magic is connected with electrons and unstable emotions and feelings, such as rapid mood swings caused by mental insanity, and forcing them to become unstable and allowing other protons and neutrons from other atoms to enter another atom and changing its very element. This is what allows Discord to be able to make clouds turn into cotton candy and rain hot chocolate, by changing the nature and base elements of the cloud, he has combined it to change water into sucrose, the element that makes up cotton candy. But it is theorized that there is a constant connection being produced by Discord who is able to have a constant change in the cotton candy to make it slowly turn into magnesium, potassium, calcium, and iron, forming hot chocolate. The reasons for this are unknown, but the best explanation I can give is that Discord’s power over chaos is on such an extreme level that only he can achieve, being the very spirit of chaos no less. No known being is able to use chaos magic to our knowledge, so research can't be made on the subject until a being, other than Discord, can use it.
The very elements that make up this world are influenced by magic and the emotions we feel when using said magic. Protons are connected to light magic using positive emotions. Neutrons are connected to dark magic using negative emotions. And electrons are connected to chaos magic with unstable emotions and an unnatural mental state. This is my theory on how to explain how magic is connected to the fibers of the universe, how it works, and how it can be understood. Even with this knowledge, there is still too much we do not know, and need more research to better explain it. I shall wait for the day we make a breakthrough in our research and shall update the theory to have better accuracy for those who wish to understand how magic really works in this world of ours.
This was also Originally going to be a research paper for a scientist but it wouldn't be approved as a story, but I didn't edit it either so it still has a research paper vibe to it, and I'd like to keep it that way.
