I've been nibbling away at a new fic for a week or so now; it hasn't been coming out at the frantic pace of 'The Monster Mash', but I suspect that's because my meds are a bit more balanced. (But I digress.) One of the little challenges I've set myself is to write each chapter as if it were an episode of the show, with the whole fic making up a season. That means I can't indulge myself in long narrative ramblings, I can't casually read character's minds, and I need to be sure the overall pacing of the story is appropriate for a twenty-minute show, plus opening and closing credits.
Realizing I hadn't made notes on per-scene lengths, just the overall length, I decided to go back and re-pace the scenes (essentially, imagining them animated, reading out dialogue, and the like). I got to a scene that was a hard-work montage, showing the construction of something important and time-consuming, and the way I'd originally imagined the scene, there'd be a speech about the importance of the project overlaying the action. It was all very dignified and momentous, which was the feel I was going for.
Then I heard a little voice.
This should be a musical number.
What? No!
It'd be a musical number in the show.
I hate most of the musical numbers the show already has!
But a musical number would be so much better for this scene than a boring speech.
That speech isn't boring!
Weren't you just worrying about having two speeches in the same 'episode'?

So get rid of this one and use a musical number instead. I think a march would be ideal, don't you?
Now hang on, I don't know if I can even write a musical number!

So apparently you don't have to write a clopfic to go to Pony Hell. I can't help but wonder if this is someone's revenge for chapter six...

I'm still hoping for updates to the pantheon of harmony, now that was a unique story, as for monster mash... I liked twilight's chapter best.
