I’ve been feeling nostalgic lately... · 3:04pm Oct 28th, 2021

Hey, guys. Mr. J here.

Not too long ago and even now, I have been feeling nostalgic for a certain show that you all know and love... MLP: FIM. You’re reading this right—I have nostalgic feelings for the old series, and I have no idea why.

How can a guy like me have feelings for a show that I used to admire? I’m being serious when I say that I actually...... miss Gen 4. Despite what seasons 8 and 9 had done, the whole series was a show like never before when it comes to storytelling, morals, and character development. Granted, there are some other shows which have these qualities but this stood out to me the most...... maybe I’m tripping. Maybe it’s because of the G5 film that’s making me feel this way. I don’t know.....

If I were to give my opinions on the show’s seasons, I would say that seasons 1-4 were pretty good (season 4 being my favorite). Seasons 5-7 were...okay. Not perfect but okay/decent. Seasons 8-9—well, you all know my opinion on those.

I’m sure you fellas can understand my feelings right now. Despite the fact I never grew up with the show, it became so... attached to me the first time I watched it back in mid-2018. “School Daze” was the very first episode I watched, but a fan-made crossover YouTube video featuring MLP & Transformers is what introduced me to the show at that time.

*sigh* I’m now starting to have some thoughts as to whether the G5 series will be just as good as its predecessor. I can’t help but feel nostalgic on the show that I’ve been writing fanfics for over a year now and been a member on this site for two years.

No problem. I think Gen 5 has some potential. Maybe not that Mama's Boy Sprouts.

Eh, only time will tell.

I understand where you’re coming from. Despite not remembering at the moment what films or shows I had those experiences with, I recall this sort of thing happening with me.

In terms of MLP: FiM, I believe that the times where the series was at its peak was with Seasons 1-7 (Seasons 4 & 7 being my favorites) and the 2017 MLP Movie. The 8th and 9th seasons, though...I thought they were good in their own way, but there were elements that didn’t exactly make them the most canonically consistent per say. Much of the blame for it all is something that I believe goes toward them being helmed by newcomer Nicole Dubuc, which attributes to her lack of larger experience with writing for the show.

Bro, a while back, I’d just have those thoughts where I’d love to go back to the days when new episodes were still coming out, and the story wasn’t over.

I haven’t felt nostalgia for the show in a while, but I’ve had it.

*Grabs a jar and a glass of orange juice* Here.

It´s ok if you feel this way. After all, FIM is the main reason why you´re here! Has this show affected you in another good way? For example, in my case, this show has helped me see that I am creative. And it also has helped me go through middle school and high school, really tough times if you ask me.

Maybe that´s why you´re feeling nostalgic. Watching the new movie, you´re suddenly remembering all the good times you had with that show. Who wouldn´t? It has great lore, great story and great characters. Season 4, in my opinion is a masterpiece. But like with many shows, writing decayed. And that can make us feel deeply betrayed by the show to the point of hating it.

Another case: my sister wanted to forget about Game of Thrones after the horrendous season 8 but during 2020 summer her friend started watching the show, and since the plot is really complicated, she decided to explain to her and started remembering how good the show was. So she rewatched it with me until season 4. From then on, the other seasons didn´t exist for us :rainbowlaugh:. She´s still salty but she also likes some characters.

What do I mean with this? Firstly, aknowledge you´re feeling like this, which you already did. Secondly, ask yourself, forgetting season 8 and 9, do you like the show as its own world and characters? Perhaps deep down you still do. And thus, the reason why you might be feeling nostalgic! What to do next? That´s up to you. If still liking the show despite its flaws makes you feel better, great! If you prefer not going back to it, that´s also great! Whatever makes you feel good, it will be the right decision

Hope this helps and sorry for the long comment.
